A band straying into a secluded part of the Pacific Northwest
stumbles onto a horrific act of violence. Because they are the only witnesses,
they become the targets of a terrifying gang of skinheads who want to make sure
all the evidence is eliminated. Written by Aymanati (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)
GREENROOM is written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier, and
produced by Neil Kopp & Victor Moyers. For me this was one of those films I
heard good things about before even seeing the trailer. Upon seeing the trailer
I got a better idea of what this film was going to bring to the table. Then to
finally get to see it, man I was tense as fuck. This indeed was or is the type
of film I enjoy “the who is going to survive” type that well, could happen to
just about anyone given the right situation. Obviously the setting the of this
film to me added to the intense drama as a skinhead club/bar would not be a
place you’d find my black ass, but hey to each their own. I also thought the
performance of Anton Yelchin (Pat) and Patrick Stewart (Darcy) was incredibly believable.
So as for GREENROOM I give it 4 stars as an extremely entertaining film.
Welcome, here is another fashion / lifestyle sketch that I worked on and I'm calling it "Homecoming". If you'd like to see me working on this sketch check out this link toWATCH ME DRAW #10 . Enjoy!
Joy has always been fascinated by creating things; This pursuit
was always supported emotionally by her maternal grandmother, Mimi. Joy feels
that lack of practical support has led to others making fortunes on ideas she
came up with years ago but could not act upon manufacturing. Despite being
broke, Joy is the person in her extended family to whom everyone has always
turned, in the process forgoing her own life, including not having attended
college to help see her parents through their divorce. She works in an
unsatisfying job as an Eastern Airlines ticket clerk; and lives with her mother
Terry who spends all day in bed watching soap operas; her ex-husband Tony, a
less than successful aspiring Latino Tom Jones
wannabe; and their two children. Added to this mix is her father Rudy, the
owner of a failing heavy-duty garage, which is managed by Joy's older half-sister
Peggy, with whom she has somewhat of a strained relationship, and for which Joy
does the books. Sharon, Rudy's latest ... Written by Huggo(Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)
JOY is directed by David O. Russell, written by David O.
Russell & Annie Mumolo, produced by John Davis, Megan Ellison, Jonathan Gordon,
& Ken Mok. Being familiar with the body of work of David O. Russell I have
grown to like his sensibilities as a film director. I have enjoy his comedic
themes and stories as well as his flair for the dramatic which could clearly
been seen in SILVERLINGS PLAYBOOK. So when I heard he had directed another film
entitled JOY based on a true story using just about the same cast I knew at
some point I’d have to see that film. Since watching the film I film much like
I do when I see films based on reality which is I’d rather not have know as for
some reason stories based on real life lack the “magic” as a viewer that fiction
films carry. I know that is a strange critique, but I have felt this way about
even the best films based on real life. Anyway, I also felt this film lacked
the quirky comedic genius of FLIRTING WITH DISASTER or even SILVERLINGS
PLAYBOOK, which I love from David O. Russell. The story is definitely an
uplifting tale and I love that also each actor in the cast does great work. So
for JOY I give it 4 stars.

SCIARIO is directed by Denis Villeneuve, written by Taylor
Sheridan, and produced by Basil Iwanyk, Thad Luckinbill, Trent Luckinbill, and
Molly Smith. This a film that when
seeing the trailer seemed confusing and hard to say what the story was about,
but at the same time it was totally engaging and made me want to see it. The
fact that Benicio Del Toro was in it also made it a film I needed to see. Yet
as I crossed my fingers, that it would be nothing like the film SAVAGES I
continued to seek it out. My hope was confirmed as the actual film was
entertaining and held my attention throughout. I think the way the viewer was
given just enough information to understand the premise helped the unfolding of
the story that much more riveting. In the end the film in my opinion has the
elements in the story that stick with you yet I wouldn’t call it an Oscar level
film, but definitely a film I won’t soon forget. So for SCIARIO I give it 3 ½
stars, hey why not 4.
After an outlaw unknowingly leads a band of cannibalistic
Troglodytes into the peaceful western town of Bright Hope, the monsters kidnap
several settlers, including the wife of a local rancher. Despite his injured
leg the rancher joins a small rescue party with the sheriff, his aging deputy
and a strong-willed gunslinger. What follows is a journey into hell on earth as
the posse comes to realize it is up against a foe whose savagery knows no
bounds. The film takes place in the mid 1800's around the border of what is now
Texas and New Mexico. Written by Anonymous(Courtesy

BONE TOMAHAWK is written & directed by S. Craig Zahler,
and produced by Jack Heller and
Dallas Sonnier. As a film goer and film connoisseur I miss the days
where a good western would take you on a journey through the wild west. Upon
finding BONE TOMAHAWK on Netflix I had high hopes for this film and a rebirth
of the genre. As I began to watch and see the characters set off on their
journey of rescue of the damsel in distress I started to see elements that
reminded me of why I love a good western. At a certain point though the story
fell flat as the story took on a twist that for me lacked the reasoning or even
back-story to help me suspend my disbelief and stick with the story till its
end. I appreciate the attempt to tell a pulpy old western story, but for me
connection to characters and the story lacked what I love about other westerns
like The Wild Bunch, The Good, the Bad, and Ugly, or even Unforgiven. So for
BONE TOMAHAWK I give it 3 stars.

CHI – RAQ is directed by Spike Lee, written by Kevin
Willmott & Spike Lee, and produced by Spike Lee. As a fan of Spike Lee, his
films and method of telling a story I find sometimes his stance on things has
to be taken with a grain of salt. Whether it is a political stance or just his
point of view on certain issues I find somehow these elements always leak out
into his films. I’m not saying it is a good thing or a bad thing it is just an
observation after having seen almost all of his films. That said CHI – RAQ is a
film modeled after the play called Lysisrtata and how a group of women used
their bodies to stop a war. Having known that cued me into why the dialogue was
done in a sing songy poetic nature. For me at first that was a little jarring,
but as I settled in it seemed to make sense. I found CHI – RAQ to be
entertaining, but at a certain point I just kind of lost interest as it began
to take on the absurd and outrageous and I kind of wanted to see the story told
in a real way without all the metaphor and unrealistic take on a real matter.
Overall not my favorite Spike Lee film, but still entertaining so I give CHI –
RAQ 3 stars
A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue
mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia, the beautiful
and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting
and uncovers the existence of the sinister organization known as SPECTRE.
Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh, the new head of the Centre of National
Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of MI6 led by
M. Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny and Q to help him seek out Madeleine Swann,
the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White, who may hold the clue to untangling
the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a
way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he
learns a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks.
SPECTRE is directed by Sam Mendes, written by John Logan,
Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Jez Butterworth, and produced by Barbara
Broccoli. As long as I can remember I’ve been a fan of the 007 James Bond
series. I practically grew up watching theme from likes of Sean Connery and
Roger Moore my roots grow deep. Now the recent continuation of the series with
Daniel Craig maybe I’ve out grown the love for 007. This film in particular to
me didn’t carry the attraction it used to, maybe the fact that I already know
that James is going to make it out alive and get the girl. In that case it is
more about switching up the story rather than the character himself. I like
that James is so stylish and a bit of a rebel at times as well as his 100%
commitment to his job. We seen him show some vulnerability, but never to the
point where he seems flawed or have any kind of weakness. This to me is where
I’d like to see some development. I do understand that in the reality of the
James Bond universe if he was to have any real weakness he’d probably be dead
already. So I get it, I’m just ready to see some vulnerability so can suspend
my disbelief and really feel like the danger James faces could really be his
end. So as for SPECTRE I give it 3 stars.

Based on true events, Foxcatcher tells the dark and fascinating
story of the unlikely and ultimately tragic relationship between an eccentric
multi-millionaire and two champion wrestlers. When Olympic Gold Medal winning
wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) is invited by wealthy heir John du Pont
(Steve Carell) to move on to the du Pont estate and help form a team to train
for the 1988 Seoul Olympics at his new state-of-the-art training facility,
Schultz jumps at the opportunity, hoping to focus on his training and finally
step out of the poverty striken situation Olympic caliber athletes like he and

FOXCATCHER is directed by Bennett Miller, written by E. Max
Frye & Dan Futterman, and produced by Anthony Bregman, Megan Ellison, Jon
Kilik & Bennett Miller.
As this was a movie that I had lived through the true story playing out
in the news and media, yet not familiar with the entire story when I found out
they were making the film there was some interest in seeing it. Playing the
lead role was a completely transformed Steve Carell, which was another draw to
this film. Upon watching the film, I felt it had a slow and methodical pace
that spoke to the way things unfolded in real life. Having known the final out
come of this story made it difficult to fully enjoy the film in that I ended up
watching and waiting for the climatic ending to happen rather than being lost
in the events that lead to it. So for FOXCATHER I give it 3 stars.

SOUTHPAW is directed by Antoine Fuqua, written by Kurt
Sutter, and produced by Todd Black. I was definitely looking forward to this
film hearing it was directed by Antoine Fuqua. The previews told just enough
the cast seemed right, but some how and in some way this movie didn’t deliver
in the way I thought it would. I mean maybe I’m still stuck on the ROCKY films,
but SOUTHPAW was too much of a reflection of that for me to view it as a story
that was wholly original. I had a friend mention that SOUTHPAW wasn’t as
emotional sentimental as the ROCKY films, but I disagree in that in the same
way the main character was fighting for his life the boxer in this film was
fighting for his. I guess in the end I’m ready for a story of a fighter to tell
a different story and for it to stray away from the main character playing
underdog metaphor, which is what I thought this was going to be. So for
SOUTHPAW I give it 3 stars.
Brit, Candy, Cotty, and Faith have been best friends since grade
school. They live together in a boring college dorm and are hungry for
adventure. All they have to do is save enough money for spring break to get
their shot at having some real fun. A serendipitous encounter with rapper
"Alien" promises to provide the girls with all the thrill and
excitement they could hope for. With the encouragement of their new friend, it
soon becomes unclear how far the girls are willing to go to experience a spring
break they will never forget. Written by Muse Productions(Courtesy

SPRING BREAKERS is written and directed by Harmony Korine,
produced by Charles – Marie Anthonioz, Jordan Gerther, Chris Hanely and David
Zander. This film caught a lot of buzz early on because of its mainly female
cast and who they were. These young actresses trying to shed their little girl
image as Mickey Mouse club and High School Musical fame ventured into this film
to be merely clad in nothing more than a bikini. The hype seemed real, as I had
seen previous films from Harmony Korine that moved me like KIDS, which he
wrote, and GUMMO. My anticipation to see this film was high, but as I began to
watch these young actresses try to step out of their previous well known roles
I lost interest it just didn’t seem genuine or at least it was hard to suspended
my disbelief. There were indeed moments of the film that haunt my memory in a
good way and I credit that the Harmony Korine’s eclectic directing style, but
otherwise the film to me is a miss. So for SPRING BREAKERS I give it 3 stars.
Set in 2031, the entire world is frozen except for those aboard
the Snowpiercer. For 17 years, the world's survivors are on a train hurtling
around the globe creating their own economy and class system. Led by Curtis, a
group of lower-class citizens living in squalor at the back of the train are
determined to get to the front of the train and spread the wealth around. Each
section of the train holds new surprises for the group who have to battle their
way through. A revolution is underway. Written by Anne Campbell(Courtesy
of Internet Movie Database)
SNOWPIERCER is directed by Bong Joon Ho, written by Kelly
Masterson, and produced by Miky Lee and Steven Nam. To be honest I had seen
this film twice, in my first viewing the action of the story enthralled me as well
as its offbeat humor in a story where a character fights his way to uncover
truth I thought was great. In my second viewing I focused more on trying to
uncover what was the meaning of the film in this bleak look of the future.
There was definite talk about classicism and how each class has its place,
which reflected the reality we live in today. This was indeed a cerebral film
yet at the same time it held my interest throughout even when I was just
looking to be entertained. So for SNOWPIERCER I give it 4 stars.

MAN FROM RENO is directed by Dave Boyle, written by Dave
Boyle, Joel Clark, and Michael Lerman, produced by Ko Mori. I felt was an
interestingly crafted noir type thriller. I liked that it was set somewhere
other than New York and had a diverse cast. The story for me kept me intrigued so I liked that as well as
the pacing making the viewer has to pay attention to the clues. I also believe
each actor portrayed their character very well and no one seemed miss cast or
underwhelming in their performance. So for MAN FROM RENO I give it 4 stars.
