NETFLIX & CHILL #43

Libby Day is a lifeless woman who survived the massacre of her family in their farmhouse in the countryside of Kansas when she was eight. She's been living on donations and lectures ever since. Thirty years ago, the police believed that a satanic cult was responsible for the murder of her mother and two sisters, and her brother Ben was convicted with her testimony in court. Today, however, an acquaintance, Lyle Wirth, invites Libby to visit "The Kill Club", where amateurs investigate famous crimes, and she finds that they believe Ben is innocent. Libby needs money and, in return, accepts to revisit the slaughter of her family and comes up to the painful revelations and the ultimate truth. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

DARK PLACES is directed and written by Giles Paquet Brenner and produced by Azim Bolkiah. To me had an interesting story, but for me in some way there wasn’t the cohesiveness between the actors and the characters they played. The main draw here was Charlize Theron a great actress in her own right, but the neurotics of the character she played was lost in the fact that she tried to play down her looks and acting range with weak tactics like wearing a hat the majority of the film and bursts of rage that seemed better fit for her role in FURY ROAD. She is not all to blame for this film not exciting me, but either way for DARK PLACES I give it 2 stars.

NETFLIX & CHILL #42

A crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city's history, and centered on the lives of an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business and capitalize on opportunities as the rampant violence, decay, and corruption of the day drag them in and threaten to destroy all they have built. Written by Production (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is written and directed by J.C. Chandor and produced by Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb. To me was a fantastic film; it was a slow churning thriller moral tale that made you think. The idea that a man who wants his business to stay honest no matter the odds or circumstances is a story we need to hear in these days and times. Cinematically the film looks amazing and builds the tension very well. Again pacing is very deliberate and slows you down so in one scene to explode in the next. This is not the type of gangster film you are used to so be prepared. So as for A MOST VIOLENT YEAR I give it four stars as a very thought provoking and entertaining film.

Caleb, a 26-year-old programmer at the world's largest Internet Company, wins a competition to spend a week at a private mountain retreat belonging to Nathan, the reclusive CEO of the company. But when Caleb arrives at the remote location he finds that he will have to participate in a strange and fascinating experiment in which he must interact with the world's first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot girl. Written by DNA FILMS (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

EX MACHINA is written and directed by Alex Garland, and produced by Allon Reich and Andre Macdonald. For me was an extremely interesting look at the Artificial Intelligence theme like GATTICA, A.I., or even the Matrix. I’ve seen other films take a different approach to the same idea, but I think here it is more about what denotes “intelligence” or a being that can think like us can it really be us? I truly like the set up the film and how the lead up to the climax had you thinking one thing, but with an interesting twist we are forced to think about the real, or possible outcome of A.I. let loose on the world. So for EX MACHINA I give it 4 stars as a very thought provoking and entertaining film.

A young Spanish woman who has newly moved to Berlin finds her flirtation with a local guy turn potentially deadly as their night out with his friends reveals a dangerous secret. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

VICTORIA is directed by Sebastian Schipper, story by Sebastian Schipper, Olivia Neergaard-Holm, and Elke Frederik Schulz, and produced by Catherine Baikousis. This is a film that I knew little about before watching it. I had read the story synopsis and that is where I was hooked. Upon seeing the film I was enthralled from there it’s one shot format was intriguing and sense of how to tell the story was as well very entertaining. As they story progressed I felt myself being so involved in the story that I couldn’t take my eyes away. This was a fantastic film so I give it 4 stars   ...GO!!!
