MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #148

Will and Eden was once a loving couple. After a tragedy took their son, Eden disappeared. Two years later, out of the blue, she returns with a new husband... and as a different person, eerily changed and eager to reunite with her ex and those she left behind. Over the course of a dinner party in the house that was once his, the haunted Will is gripped by mounting evidence that Eden and her new friends have a mysterious and terrifying agenda. But can we trust Will's hold on reality? Or will he be the unwitting catalyst of the doom he senses? (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Always a sucker for a good thriller I took in the film THE INVITATION on recommendation from a fellow reviewer. Not really knowing how this tense and confined situation was going to pan out I watched with great anticipation. I felt the unfolding of the story worked well and was also unpredictable enough to keep me interested. I felt the cast and their performance were adequate, but was hoping for a bit more shock value as the story was tipped on its ear. So for THE INVITATION I give it 3.25 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #147

The year is 1963, an illegal immigrant named Ho (Donnie Yen) sneaks into British-ruled Hong Kong. Equipped with guts and combat skills, he plunges into the underground world getting into constant conflict with rivals. After many adversaries, the once good-natured man is physically crippled and turns into a monster more atrocious than all the most corrupted cops and ruthless drug dealers. Ho eventually emerges as the most powerful drug lord under the control of Chief Detective Sergeant, Lee Rock (Andy Lau). However, with the establishment of Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) by the law enforcement in 1974, Rock is forced into premature retirement. But Ho still insists he would not be stopped as he determines to become the sole dictator of the drug empire. Written by DOK (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

CHASING THE DRAGON was a very interesting look into the life of a well-known triad boss. I have seen film like this regarding Italian or Irish mobsters, but showing another side was refreshing if not enlightening. The man character played by Andy Lau, who was playing a bad guy for the first time in his career, showed his acting flair. Furthermore, I must speak on the production level of this film as I see the Asian film markets stepping up their game and style. One issue of course was the film was subtitled and in order to keep up with the fast paced film it was hard to keep up with the dialogue. So for CHASING THE DRAGON I give it 3.75 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #146

When a videographer answers an advert of the website Craigslist for a one-day job in a remote mountain town to video the last messages of a dying man. The job takes a strange turn when the last messages get darker and darker. The videographer continues to see the job through, but when it is time to leave he is unable to find his keys, and when he receives a strange phone call he finds his client is not at all what he initially seemed to be. Coming across the film trailer for CREEP I still didn’t know what to expect upon watching it. On the chance I finally did I was most struck by the performance of Mark Duplass having seen him in another film  THE ONE I LOVE where he was great as well. I was less struck by the way the story was delivered using rough and shaky camera footage ala BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Overall I felt the film was interesting, but didn’t hold my attention all the way through, but delivered with a splitting end. So for CREEP I give it 3.25 stars of 5 for it’s casting of Mark Duplass and its unique story.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #145

Barry Seal was just an ordinary pilot who worked for TWA before he was recruited by the CIA in 1978. His work in South America eventually caught the eye of the Medellín Cartel, associated with Pablo Escobar, who needed a man with his skill set. Barry became a drug trafficker, gun smuggler and money launderer. Soon acquiring the title, 'The gringo that always delivers'. Written by Viir khubchandani  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

AMERICAN MADE has made me rethink my thoughts on films based on true stories. I say that maybe because it is in the manner in which the retelling matters to me. AMERICAN MADE the retelling is a rumpus and daring tale, which made the film that much better as much as what was going on was already truly unbelievable. Tom Cruise (Barry Seal) was great in this film transcending his mega movie star status and really becoming the character. So for AMERICAN MADE I give it 4.5 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #144

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of meta-humans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. To me the idea of the film JUSTICE LEAGUE sounds like a great adventure. Yet not being deep into the comic book lore of these films on one hand allows me to be in a position to just being entertained rather than finding flaws that don’t match up with the literature. So upon watching the film I found it to be heavy on action, but not so much for plot or a storyline that organically built its characters. In the end I was entertained by another comic book movie with incredible feats of strength and massive destruction, yet I feel nothing for what this team may face in future stories or how the dynamic of the team may change over time, which is what really make things interesting. So for JUSTICE LEAGUE I give it 3 ½ of 5 stars.
