FILM REVIEW: THE TOWN

I had seen previews to this film months before its release and knew I had to see this movie when it came out. There was just something about the story, characters, and setting that intrigued me wondering how events would unfold. When I got a chance to finally see the film it was the weekend of its last run in theaters and still people had not heard of it or faintly remembered what the plot was. I managed to show up late to the screening, which is a real deal breaker for me, but I decided to stay and follow through and take in the film.

The TOWN is the story of the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston which is renowned for churning out a high number of armed robbers, generation after generation. These robbers never leave their Charlestown life on their own volition, the neighborhood where there is an unwritten code to protect that lifestyle. Such robbers include friends Doug MacRay, James Coughlin, Albert 'Gloansy' Magloan and Desmond Elden. Doug and James in particular treat each other like family, as the Coughlins have realistically been as such to Doug since Doug's mother ran off and Doug's father, Stephen MacRay, was sent to prison. James' single mother sister, the drugged out Krista Coughlin, and Doug have a casual sexual relationship. The foursome carry out a mostly successful bank robbery, but due to circumstances take the bank manager, Claire Keesey, hostage for a short period before releasing her physically unharmed. They then find out that Claire lives in Charlestown... Written by Huggo

The film was written by Peter Craig, Ben Affleck, Aaron Stockard (adapted from the novel Prince of Thieves by Chuck Hogan), directed by Ben Affleck, produced by Graham King from Warner Bros. studios 2010.

I fully enjoyed this film, it kept me intrigued and held up its tension and authenticity through out. I believe its portrayal of drama, emotional situations, and action was the main reason I got so wrapped up in what was coming across the screen. If anything, I do wish that the direction of the storyline ended on a stronger note, which in my mind would have taken this film to another level setting it apart from other films in its genre.

Overall this was a good film that I would recommend to others to go and see. It was entertaining and when I go to see a film that is really all I can ask so I give this film 3 1/2 stars.
