MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #246

Red, a safe cracker who has just been released from prison, is trying to hold his family together as his past catches up with him in the form of Luc, a psychopathic contract killer who's seeking revenge for the death of his brother. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

LUCKY DAY (2019) is directed and written by Roger Avary, produced by Dan Carmody & Samuel Haddida. This was a film where I wanted to see how filmmakers take different routes in their careers. Saying that, Roger Avary, who wrote and directed this film, once had close ties with Quentin Tarantino and a writing credit on PULP FICTION, if you didn’t know. Yet, Roger Avary’s career has not gone as stellarly as Q.T.? That question sparked my interest in seeing this film LUCK DAY to see for myself if anything separates the two cinematically.

Upon watching, I was thrilled by a stunning opening title sequence design, something that I have seen falls off in these past years. Yet as the film played out, I could see how Mr. Avary and Mr. Tarantino were close other than working in a video store as some of the writing and dialogue patterns seemed familiar.

It seemed a little shaky; I definitely had to suspend disbelief for a good portion of this film. As for acting performances, the man character Red played by Luke Bracey was charming and all but never really did anything commendable, which would have been nice being he was fresh out.

In The End: LUCKY DAY was a great look at how careers differ, but as a testament to writing and directing style, I can see the influences. And with all of that LUCK DAY was a mediocre film for me where I was left hoping for more. So for me, I give this film 2.5 of 5 stars.
