MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #114

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, the tenuous domestic order he has established with his wife and son is put to the ultimate test with the arrival of a desperate young family seeking refuge. Despite the best intentions of both families, paranoia and mistrust boil over as the horrors outside creep ever-closer, awakening something hidden and monstrous within him as he learns that the protection of his family comes at the cost of his soul. The film IT COMES AT NIGHT showed some promise upon viewing the trailer, but as I watched I kept hoping for more. I am all for dropping the viewer in the middle of some drama without a clear reason, but at the same time some details to why or what is going on always helps. I also feel that within in that limited framework it was difficult to understand the actions of the films characters. Visually the film did a good job of tensing out certain scenes that would have otherwise been dry without the stellar camera work and cinematic music. So for IT COMES AT NIGHT I give it 3 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #113

The story of two Catholic missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) - at a time when Catholicism was outlawed and their presence forbidden. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

I selected this film SILENCE off the strength of who directed it, being Martin Scorsese. Call me a huge fan of his work and his attitude toward the craft of filmmaking. Seeing the trailer for SILENCE it didn’t seem like a film Scorsese would be known for, but that made it that much more intriguing. Upon seeing the film I was not quite sure that I was going to enjoy the journey this film depicted, yet I continued to watch. The culture and times were for me were highly interesting, but this torturous story that unraveled was quite burdensome leaving me wondering why life had to be so hard. So for SILENCE I give it 3 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #112

An ex-con reunites with his estranged wayward 17-year old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.

So upon seeing the trailer of BLOOD FATHER I watched with hope that it would pan out to be a film jackpot. Upon seeing the film I felt is showed that Mel Gibson still has his acting chops and that sometimes chemistry can make or break a film. In this case the chemistry in question was that of Mel Gibson and Erin Moriarty, the actress that played his daughter Lydia in the film. Furthermore the glimpses shown, as back-story for the film seemed more interesting than the one story being told. Ultimately, I gave BLOOD FATHER 3 out of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #111

A triumphant epic of survival and a tale of powerful womanhood and resistance against the unforgiving cruelty of a hell on earth. Our heroine is Liz (Dakota Fanning), carved from the beautiful wilderness, full of heart and grit, hunted by a vengeful Preacher (Guy Pearce) - a diabolical zealot and her twisted nemesis. But Liz is a genuine survivor; she's no victim - a woman of fearsome strength who responds with astonishing bravery to claim the better life she and her daughter deserve. Fear not. Retribution is coming. Written by Anonymous

Having my last few reviews being in the western genre I would have to say that this particular film BRIMSTONE departed the most from the typical storyline of the old west and the new frontier. Almost carrying a bit of a horror element with it BRIMSTONE’S trailer seemed to tell the tale of a supernatural being or entity. Yet upon watching the film I couldn’t be more wrong. The storyline was indeed disturbing, but at the same time it made me think of the harshness of the lives lead by those whom came before.  So for BRIMSTONE I give it a 4 out of 5 more for it unique storytelling pattern than its actual content.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #110

This is a story about a deeply disturbed civil war veteran and mass murderer searching for a woman that he kidnapped to be his wife. She was rescued by her brothers and husband. During his search we see him as a split personality, one, the sad war veteran, and the other, the evil mass murderer. As the story unfolds, the sad war veteran takes one the personality of the evil mass murderer. The murderer goes on to find the woman he was looking for and to murder almost everyone. DIABLO sounds like an ominous name for a film and much of what the trailer depicted made it seem even more like an interesting pick. Unfortunately that is where the excitement for this film stopped. Although the film was lead by Clint Eastwood’s son Scott this western type film for me fell flat with a weak story, foreshadowing that gave it away too early and an ending that still puzzles me. I also felt casting choices made the film that much more of a disappointment. So in the end I give DIABLO I give it 2 stars of 5.
