Filmed with vérité intimacy for almost a decade, QUEST is the
moving portrait of an American family living in North Philadelphia. Beginning
at the dawn of the Obama presidency, parents Christopher "Quest"
Rainey, and his wife, Christine'a "Ma Quest" Rainey raise a family
while navigating the poverty and strife that grips their neighborhood. They
nurture a community of artists in their basement home music studio, but even
this creative sanctuary can't always keep them safe. Epic in scope, QUEST is a
vivid illumination of race and class in America, and a testament to love,
commitment, healing and hope. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)
Although I usually don’t review documentaries, when I saw
the preview to QUEST I found myself dying to see how their story unfolded.
Whether it was seeing people that looked like me or just seeing a family
setting like mine growing up were elements that drew me in. As I watched it was
easy to relate to their daily struggle to keep their head above water and keep
the family together. Of course tragedy had to strike at some point as it did
and even that struck a chord with me. So for QUEST I give it 3.75 stars of 5
for a well-crafted story.
