MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #182

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity's final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began - The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse. Written by Screen Gems / Constantin (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

As this was said to be the last in the series of RESIDENT EVIL films having seen all previous ones it was a must to see how they end it in RESIDENT EVIL: FINAL CHAPTER. I never saw this films as filmmaking genius and I had never played the video game the films are based on, but I always found them entreating meshing a zombie type apocalypse with a corporate conspiracy. This time around expecting this to be the final film I assumed a lot of loose ends in the story would be solved. Yet what I found was more of the same as from past films. So for RESIDENT EVIL: FINAL CHAPTER I give it 3 stars of 5.

THE LIST

He looked outside to see the downpour ever-increasing making him want to call the whole thing off. He continued to contemplate the decision not to head into the growing storm when he looked into his fridge seeing bits and pieces of what was to be a well-stocked fridge ready to entertain guests the following night. Torn between that and his pitch he was developing he found himself in a bit of a moment of paralysis. He looked at his watch it read 8:30pm. He had been home since 5pm forgetting to head to the grocery store on his way home was now clearly encroaching on his evening's plans.

He figured now he'd just have to bite the bullet and make the run running the pitch through his head venturing to the store to make up time finalizing the entire thing as he pre-made a dish and appetizers for the dinner party for the following night. Still in his work clothes charcoal slacks, a corn flour blue oxford, and a red knit tie. He then put on his London Fog trench coat and left for the store.

His mind was on the pitch he was to give in a matter of days looking for the angle that would hook the client on his idea of hosting an event to gain traction for their company. That is when he remembered he had forgotten the list of items to purchase. Exasperated, sensing the way the day was going he'd declined to fight back through the rain to head back up to his apartment as he had already got situated in his vehicle. He told himself he'd figure something out once getting to the store, knowing how he could be in a store eyeballing everything. So he mustered up the will power to continue starting up his pearl Lexus and headed to the store.

He needed them to trust him for them to see his point of view, as the thought about how to persuade the clients he began talking to himself saying "I need to prove to them this is for the people." He said this stopped at a light the rain steadily coming down dancing off the illuminated street. At the same time, the event needs to sound fun, something that would draw a crowd. This thought came to him as he pulled into the grocery store lot. As he parked and prepared himself for the nasty weather outside he felt the event would need some form of social lubricant to be it a bit of wine and spirits or caffeinated beverages like coffee and tea as they came with many fewer drawbacks than the consumption of alcohol. He had been at several office parties and gatherings where people definitely overindulged. So he made a mental note of that as he popped open his car door and made a run for the front door.

Inside he shook himself dry like a dog fresh from the pool. The store was somewhat still a few customers milling around, as the night shift remained focused on their nightly duties. He pulled up a cart and began thinking of ways to promote this event granted the client took it up. At about that moment as he walked up to the first isle did he give thought to what it would be that he'd serve to his guest at his dinner party. So he began thinking of those he was inviting, and what they may like and one by one item began entering his mind. Something's began to appear to be too complicated, as with only handful things at his apartment added ingredients would be needed to make the dishes worthwhile. He continued to browse using the guests as his catalyst. From there, his basket began to slowly fill while in the back of his head the developing pitch touched on how he would promote the event be it part radio, TV, and print it needed to be right for the client.

By the time he had realized the last isle had crept up. He had filled the cart with items to host his dinner party, and he had gained some insight on how to create a pitch his client would go for. He moved to the cashier a young woman in her late teens early twenties chewing gum she rang him up he paid. At the door to leave, he saw it was still raining somewhat hard, so he again braced for the weather to get his bounty home safe and sound. Upon making it back home he looked at the list securely attached to his fridge door realizing he had gotten more than the list required and even an extra bottle of Californian Merlot that was highlighted on the list as very important, he found one in his cabinet. That is when he vowed to himself to never go the grocery store without an agenda.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #181

Inside a desert oasis, a queen (Lucy Liu) lays dying as her son Prince (Jeffrey Wahlberg) travels across barren waste lands to find a near-mythical medicine to save her life. After evading violent raiders on motorbikes led by the Warlord (James Franco) and his enforcer (Cliff "Method Man" Smith), Prince meets Ash (Suki Waterhouse), the Warlord's robot sex companion-assassin who's in search of her own soul. As Prince is captured by the Drug lord (Milla Jovovich), the Warlord's forces roar in - and Prince fights to save the remnants of humanity. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Well to be honest I’d have to say that I don’t remember why I selected FUTURE WORLD for a viewing, but that is what we have today. Within a film trying to depict a dystopian world I felt it was a bit lacking. I also felt the story itself lacked any real developed tension as it moved too quickly. I also felt some casting choices were made to help bolster the films legitimacy. So for FUTURE WORLD I give it 2 stars of 5.

BOY SAMURAI #3

That evening the sun began to set on the village, as the villager's hearts were heavy with anxiety. Knowing what they were possibly going to be faced with had everyone confused and frustrated. The boy, his father, and mother sat having dinner in silence. The boy himself after a rather full day and getting to sit in on a meeting saw his father diplomatically handle the fear that was running rampant within the community. Talking with elders as well as the everyday man about the quickly approaching foreign ships. This inspired something in the boy he felt proud of his father and wanted to become more like him serving the people of the island.

As they continued to eat in silence, the father motioned to the boy that after dinner, they must have a talk. His mother looked up from her dinner at her husband, fearful of what his next words may be. There was no avoiding what was to happen next. After so many years of peaceful living and trade, the fear that everything all may come to an end wreaked havoc across the island. Even in the home of the most diplomatic man, they were forced to face the new realities.

The boy finished his meal as is mother cleared the table with a grim look on her face. The boy's father ushered his son to the open living space and sat him down in front of him. The father proceeded as if it was painful for him to speak, looking at his only son who had brought him much joy. He was nearly 12 years of age with the bone structure of his father and tender heart of his mother. Across the island, village fathers were approaching their sons with the same question the father and boy were about to be asked.  His mother stood in the next room listening intently. The hurtful words came to the father sporadic and broken he proceeded. The fathers were forced due to the impending danger of the foreign ships to allow their eldest sons to decide if they wanted to become samurai or stay a villager. The apparent problem with the plan was that if those newly recruited boys were to be samurai, they'd need to be trained. With a day or less till the arrival of the foreign ships, it looked as if they were to be lambs to the slaughter if things got violent. This was a move to appear more prominent and more protected and self-sufficient in dealing with the apparent danger.

The boy's father was still hoping things could be handled diplomatically. There'd be no need for violence, and the young samurai would be saved. They may even find new people to trade with or even an ally. This was the best-case scenario. Worst case, the island would be taken over, villagers slain or enslaved, and it could only continue to get worse within these extreme outcomes. The father looking at his boy posed the question. By holding out a hammer, which was a symbol for creating and mending the homes they lived in and developing a future on the island for villagers today and tomorrow. In his other hand, he held a sheath samurai sword from the father of his father, who for many years sat hidden away and rarely seen.

The boy looked at both items held out by his father. At his age and understanding of the situation, he couldn't really fathom what his choice may genuinely mean. His mother did, and as she heard her husband deliver the question, she held her breath for the answer. The boy looked at the hammer he had seen this many times before it was solid iron a bit rusty, but genuinely uninteresting. The sword was foreign he'd seen it unsheathed once before and imagined what it would be like to use it imagining a life as a samurai. The boy reached out his hand and chose the sword taking it from his father's side and held it on his own. It was massive, more substantial than he thought, but at the same time easy to manipulate and wield. The father looked at his son's fascination with the weapon, fearful of what he may have to face. His wife let out a cry seeing her son's choice was final; this was the plan.

The fathers of the boys who elected to be samurai were to meet at the temple that night. Their meeting was to see if they had enough to pose as an army. One by one father and son ventured into the temple. Each father who entered had concern written on their faces worried they'd be sending their sons to an early grave. Throughout the boys each wielding his own sword were excited, but soon became informed of their new duties and to the plan they were now a significant part of. As they began to try to outfit the newly drafted samurai with uniforms from years past the eldest man standing alone in the corner of the temple watching felt a shudder in his bones as the foreigners finally reached the island.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #180

It's been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn...or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database )

Having seen the previous installments of the PURGE series it only made sense to check out PURGE: ELECTION YEAR. Upon watching and understanding the universe that the purge inhabits I was taken back by the many issues in the film that reflect issues we have in real day to day life. I’m not making the comparison to say the idea that the purge should be a real thing, but more or less I’m just showing the parallels I found interesting. As for the overall story I felt it was plausible based on the purge universe and truly chilling. I did like seeing Frank Grillo reprising his role of Leo Barnes from a previous PURGE film. Outside of that I wasn’t highly impressed, but I figured I’d be more entertained. So for PURGE: ELECTION YEAR I give it a 2.75 of 5.

BOY SAMURAI #2

With his mind racing lying in his bed still wide-awake, the boy recalled the story the village elder told of the foreigners from the sailing ships so many years ago. This made the boy's heartbeat like a drum. He wondered what his father would decide in the morning, as there was not much time to weigh out the possibilities. With no real idea who and what these sailors may want or if they came in peace or were looking for war, the choices needed to keep the village safe. Soon with all these thoughts swimming in the young boy's head, he found himself drift off to sleep only to rise early in the morning.

That morning the boy found his father outside meditating. He watched him from a window still, quiet, with his eyes closed. His mother soon came out to serve breakfast to which the boy asked his mother what his father had decided to do, to which the mother, fearful of what may happen told the boy in due time the answers will come. The boy ate his breakfast, and as he finished, his father came in with a reassuring smile that seemed to say he had found a solution. Remembering what his mother told him the boy let his father be and ran off with some of the other local boys his age to play. As he was leaving his parents embraced.

One of the island children's favorite past times was to run through the village ending up at the temple and race paper cranes down the creek that ran behind it. This past time could be very lucrative if you were part of the group of older boys who had learned the art of the gamble. With so much tension in the air, the older boys were there when the boy and his friends arrived. The older boys were on a hot streak against a derelict man who was betting his last warm bun on his crane losing three times previous.

Ready, set, go, and the cranes were released drifting neck and neck down the stream. The man's crane pushed ahead only to catch a bit of turbulence in the water and was overtaken by the older boy's crane and never to relinquish the lead again. A cheer went up within the group of older boys. The boy and his friends watched as the man handed over his last hot bun and walked off disgusted. Lunchtime came soon as the boy and his friends had ventured through the village seeking mischief and running with a few girls their age.

Making his way back home, the boy wondered if his father had made a decision on how to direct the island on how to deal with the soon to arrive foreign ships. To his surprise, his father was not there he and a few other men had gone to the lookout point to observe the vessel a bit more. The boy wanted to be there pleading with his mother to let him take his lunch on the road and meet with them there. She eventually ok'd his request and the boy was off a sack of food in his hand and excitement in his body that fueled his sprint out to the lookout point.

His mother told him the men and his father were there discussing the point of views on the solution? Each man had valid points. Many based on fear, but without an already in place set of samurai to help protect the island if the foreign ships did not come in peace, the island may indeed be in danger. The boy's father continued to speak on being diplomatic and making friends with the foreigners, but only until they actually meet them and find out what they were looking for, all choices seemed short-sighted.

The men soon dispersed and yet no clear decision the draft would have to come quickly if it was to happen. Nearly now dinnertime the father and the boy talked their way back to their home. At one point, the boy asked his father if he was scared, to which the father told him a story about how sometimes fear isn't real. We may think what we see or are said beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is, but if we take our time to question what is happening and try to understand and look at it in a new way we can eventually see that what we were afraid of was nothing at all.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #179

Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood visits 1969 Los Angeles, where everything is changing, as TV star Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt) make their way around an industry they hardly recognize anymore. The ninth film from the writer-director features a large ensemble cast and multiple storylines in a tribute to the final moments of Hollywood's golden age. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

So finally getting out to see ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD I now have to review it. Having seen all of his films I find this one to be the one with out much of a framework like his past films. In a sense this film I felt was less structured in telling a dynamic story than his past films. Some may call it rambling, a story about nothing, or even underwhelming. Yet throughout the film, a film made to celebrate a city and an era dear to Tarantino himself I sat tensely wondering how he was going to complete this story admits a background many were already familiar with. To my joy Tarantino took his own route much like he did in INGLORIOUS BASTARDS and DJANGO to create his own version of history. So for ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD I give it 3.5 of 5.

BOY SAMURAI #1

It was abundance all around, and those that inhabited the village were full of joy. Life on this island was like living in paradise; the people who lived here came from many generations sent here from the mainland to cultivate the land as an alternative. Sons and daughters were born here to eventually raise their own sons and daughters. The island was populated through this process, and peace was within the island.

Fathers taught their sons the ways of the ancients, as well as Mothers, taught their daughters the techniques in leading the households.  Ambassador on the island had a young son fascinated by the ways of the ancients. He dreamed of life as a samurai. The son soon would be free to choose his lifestyle. If he so sought, as no one offspring was forced into an occupation, as it was the custom back on the mainland. Of the other choices for their son was to live life on the island cultivating the island and building the infrastructure of the growing village, which was a very respectful path. Very few were still fluent in the way of the samurai, but those who were would be called to protect the island if the time ever came.

The head family was content where they were and with their young child who quickly learned and showed high intelligence and understanding, gaining the awards and rewards of his brightness. At home, his father would tell him stories of the ancients. This further sparked his interest in learning as well as his interest in the lifestyle of the samurai. Soon the boy, when left to his own devices, would dream up his personal samurai stories of honor, trust, and living by the code. His mind was a fertile playground were any ideas he may contemplate lead him on a journey. In his own account, he'd play out in the open land and wilderness that was his home.

On one of these outings by himself, he saw off in the way distance of the ocean that surrounded the island he saw foreign ships heading toward them. These were different ships than the ones, which came for trade or were passing through posting up on the dock for at most a week to regain strength and regroup. These ships seemed menacing; it was like nothing he had ever seen. Not knowing what to do, the young boy rushed home to tell his father and mother what he had seen. Maybe they and the village elders could say to him what these ships were.

Concerned by what his son had seen the father and other men of importance in the village went to the lookout point. They found the ships still sailing in what looked like the direction of the island. The symbols on the sails were challenging to make out. They were foreign, and no one on the island was familiar with them except the eldest of the elders who was one of the offspring from the original settlers to the island. Stepping forward into the circle of men, his wife having died long ago and with no children of his own, he became a surrogate grandfather to many of the children on the island. He told the group of a time when ships of pirates barring that symbol came and terrorized the island. This wasn't without significant effect and great loss. The people of the island were able to defend themselves as several pirates in a savage battle that sent men back to their ships and back to where ever they came from. Others lost their lives to the well-trained group of samurai warriors from the island. Over time the need for samurai warriors to protect the island and the village diminished. Soon the way of the samurai became stories that fathers would tell their children as they lay in bed.

For some reason, the story the old-timer told made them fear a democratic solution, not seeing that there may be a way to work with these foreigners on these ships. That night, as the boats were at least days to two days out, the island held a village-wide meeting to decide what to do. The boy watched his father listen to the concerns of the island people. Some were fearful, others were hopeful their way of life could be extended to these foreign travelers, but no one was quite sure.

After the meeting, the boy's father, after listening to everyone, felt that they were going to act civil to the travelers like anyone from a trade ship. At the same time as over the years, they had foregone the draft of young men of age to teach them the way of the samurai and protect the island he felt they may need to declare an emergency draft. This would even mean his son, the smartest in his class one everyone could see doing great things in other places, and he'd be called to choose. As the travelers drew closer, the village was pulling into a fearful mindset, something they had not felt in recent times.
