FILM REVIEW: DONKEY PUNCH

As the list of films I've screened climbs I am forever grateful for my Netflix watch instantly feature for only $9.99 a month.

And now to the film reviewed DONKEY PUNCH. The title for me contoured up a great deal of images as to what this film would really about, none of which prepared me for what was in store. And to be honest I think I chose this film based on what the cover hailed as the sexist film of the year. We know sex sells.

So I proceeded to watch the film. DONKEY PUNCH is the story of seven young adults who after meeting at a nightclub in a Mediterranean resort decide to continue partying aboard a luxury yacht in the middle of the ocean. But when one of them dies in a freak accident, the others argue about what to do, which leads to a ruthless fight for survival. This film was written by David Bloom, directed by Oliver Blackburn, produced by Robin Gutch, Mark Herbert, and Angus Lamont, starring Robert Boutler, Sain Brecklin, Tom Burke, and Nichola Burley, from EM Media 2008.

Photobucket

As I watched the story unfold it came off vary familiar to other films I've screened with parallels in the storyline. Nonetheless, something definitely goes wrong and the characters begin to think, which for me shows who is the strongest character in the sense of how they are written into a script. A strong character has a strong thought process they don't have to be the main character or even survive the whole film to the end, but they do make decisions that show they have a will to face their fears and help the group survive. This film has that, but many of the characters came off very weak and that was annoying to me.

This film also hinges a great deal of its allure on deviant sexual POP CULTURE themes in that it is entitled "DONKEY PUNCH". If you are not too familiar with this term the film will clear that up for you. This film was entertaining and at the end of the day that is all you can really ask of a film. Yet I do enjoy a film that keeps the story tight and moving forward and if you can learn something as well its a bonus DONKEY PUNCH did that, but I got bored with some of the characters and that is why I am giving this film 3 stars.

EASY SUNDAY AFTERNOON

As I took a break from planning out my next week setting goals, meetings and finishing up design projects so I can relax. I stumbled upon this new ad campaign for GUCCI, which seemed to visually look like the movie SIN CITY. As I researched deeper I found out it was from the same visual inspiration as the movie and his name is Frank Miller. Some may know him from his gritty graphic novels, but here is the commercial spot for GUCCI and a brief inspiration/motivation from the man himself Frank Miller... I so love these visuals CHECK IT OUT!!!

THREAD MAGAZINE LAUNCH PARTY

Photobucket

Last night I was fortunate enough to attend the THREAD magazine launch party as they reveled their September issue. The buzz for this event was quite high as everyone was in an excited mood. As I waited outside for the event to commence it was an amazing site as pretty much everyone came out dressed up and I'm telling you any event becomes that much better when the ladies come out dressed to the nines, as they say.

Inside the venue was a photo gallery and studio w/ deep auburn wooden floors and photos on the wall. Upstairs drinks were served as Thee Atlantic, a band from Yuba City kicked things off after a great introduction from Mica Moreno the Co publisher. After Thee Atlantic the Moonshine Collective heated it up with mainstays Eye-Que (Thanks for the shout out Q) and Tybox. The highlight of Moonshine's set was a joint where Eye-Que flowed, Dash on vocals, and Tybox kept the beat with an impeccable beat box, great one fellas.

The show proceeded with some raffle prizes and free giveaways from the Moonshine artists before the unveiling of the September issue cover. Once the speeches were made and the anticipation high the reveled September issue was of Siobhan Barrett and a few of her following of models draped in a few of her pieces. Siobhan or the "House of Siobhan", as I've mentioned to her, has taken her to New York and abroad to study fashion design. She is indeed a true talent, but I will not say any more so you can check out the rest of the story in the September issue of THREAD magazine. Better yet go to thread-magazine.com and check out the preview issue before September's drops in just a matter days, and make sure you subscribe, its free!

Overall, it was a really great turnout and I think people are tuned into THREAD magazine. I did my socializing and met a lot of new faces, as well as those that were familiar. And again I got to comment on the number of beautifully dressed women in attendance you all were stunning, next time gentlemen lets step it up. LETS GET IT!!!

CONTINUED INSPIRATION

As summer nears an end, students rush back to class and a new routine begins. The streets are busier and there is a new kind of excitement in the air. We at Able Abe are on our way to the next installment of the DENIM PROJECT: which will be in stores soon we work away in the studio music up to bring you a great product we are always inspired by other creatives. Here is a video shoot with LUPE FIASCO that caught our attention. ENJOY

To follow up their recent profile with Ibn Jasper, illRoots caught up with Lupe Fiasco on the set of a recent RSVP Gallery lookbook video shoot for Trilly & Truly’s Basic Info. For the Spring/Summer run of merchandise, Lupe decided to stick with a simplistic theme that focused more around iconic imagery rather than complex design. A true innovator in both fashion and music, Lupe goes in depth on his clothing line, how he separates the two, and what he hopes people will take from it. Enjoy! (Source: Hypetrak.com)

IN THE NEWS: Dr. Laura and the N-word

Well I should say, that I strongly debated against writing this blog post, but I really could not, not do it being I am black and having many experiences with the N -word being used against me I had to say my peace. For those who know me know I grew up partly in Santa Barbara and partly in Sacramento all before the age of a Freshman in High School. The day of my Junior High School graduation was the last time I spent w/people that looked like me as that summer my family moved to Northern California or more specifically Orland California and Orland High School. As my younger siblings were spread out through the towns Elementary and Junior High schools I was the only one attending the High School and come to find out I was the only other black student in school with a great deal of Hispanics and White students. Talk about "culture shock" god damn.

Long story cut short I got tested time and time again to see if I'd crack as students be they in the classroom, the hallway, lunchroom, locker room, or even on the playing field as I played sports, people would drop the N -word as I walked by I guess to see me react. And every time this happened I ignored it, I tried to take the high road like MLK and be persistent to get an education and do my thing, be me. Then one day 4 years deep, I'm a senior feeling everyone was cool with me during football practice running sprints working hard to keep every ones focus sharp by cheering everyone on to finish practice on a good note one of my teammates lets fly "Shut up nigger". I stopped in my tracks I was so stunned I didn't know what to do it was like my breath was cut off it all just came out of nowhere. The coaches got on me for stopping so I got focused in again and finished practice running as hard as I could. The frustration of 4 years dealing with the bull shit from ignorant Mexicans and whites in my head all I wanted to do was smash that mutha fuckers head in for always fucking with me.

Practice ended and we were to report back dressed in game jerseys for team pictures and walking to my locker to get my gear I lost it, I cried. Some of the coaches I was cool with I guess either saw what happened or wondered why I was leaving the field and not going to the locker room tried to stop me, but I wasn't hearing it there was only one other time in attending Orland High that I felt so alone. I made it back for the team photos not saying anything to anyone about it.

A few days later the Head Coach stopped me and asked me what was up and would not let me leave unless I told him what was up, so I did. Nothing happened no apology nothing, not a fucking god damn thing. Later in the next week one of the coaches (Mr. Coil) who tried to stop me confronted me as he found out what went down and put it to me that I should have trusted him and confided in him cause come to find out he had my back while the Head Coach, a real prick and his prick steroid band of losers from Texas didn't. Mr. Coil even went as far as to put it to me in relation to what Jackie Robinson the first black baseball player had to go through. As I found out Jackie Robinson had to agree that for the first few years of his contract, if he wanted to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers, when confronted with racial comments he had to just take it and if he retaliated he was gone. Imagine that, and think about the era everyone hated blacks. Jackie Robinson along with Martin Luther King became my role models on another level that no one could touch. I tell this story because in the news we have another white person in this case Dr. Laura running off at the mouth using the N-word. Check the video below.

OK, whatever the case fuck her apology and fuck her talking about a double standard alright. You would think from my experience I'd be totally against her and shit, but my real outrage is she knew fucking better and in a moment of who knows what shes gonna let the N-word fly. Come on, shes' an educated woman with a radio show with 9 million listeners and I'd believe a great deal of those people who listen do as she does, buy what she promotes, and takes her advice. So because HBO has comedians who use the N-word in their comedy or again HBO TV shows have characters using the N-word does it make it right? I mean come on, if comedians on HBO were jumping off the Empire State building would she be jumping to?

And on her point of being "ultra sensitive" as she accused the caller of being, damn that's cold in the sense that no one can or should tell you how to feel. And fuck her trying to be "philosophical" you ain't Socrates. Needless to say I'm no fan of the bitch, I'll say this in a broad generalization, white people always want to prove their "openmidedness" by the number of non white friends they have or in this case black friends, but to me its more like this no matter how annoying or in your face your black friend is to you at what point do you drop the N-word on them? I mean fucking annoying, talking shit about you and everything? And if you can honestly say that you'd never drop the N-word on em' your quality folks you see people as people not skin color or race. The N-word is so... well just not cool in my eyes I don't use it, a lot of blacks do amongst themselves, at this point in my life I am so focused on shinning on my haters so they can get a better view of me getting mine and if you are about getting yours LETS GET IT!!!

HIP HOP'S TOP EARNERS

If you listen to Hip Hop music, and even if you don't, it is a great draw for many across the United States and abroad. Hip Hop has truly turned into a money making industry, just ask any studio executive. And whether it is a strong fan base, platinum records, awards, or savvy business deals the formula has not yet been written to create multi millionaires or even successful artists. That said, many in the industry would be satisfied with just one hit record, but the list of Forbes magazines top 5 earners in Hip Hop show a group of men who have had top albums, sold out concerts, longevity in the game, as well as an acumen for business.

What follows is the list compiled by Forbes magazine of the Top 5 earners in Hip Hop starting with # 5.

Photobucket

5. Andre "Dr. Dre" Young - $17M

Legendary rapper-producer is also one of hip-hop's savviest--unlike many who sell away the rights to their songs, Dr. Dre hangs on to most of his. Still collects royalties on multiplatinum albums like 1992 classic The Chronic, which sold nearly 10 million copies worldwide. Also rakes in cash from his headphone line Beats by Dre, a partnership with Interscope Records. Served as executive producer for Eminem's "Recovery," which sold over 1 million U.S. copies in its first two weeks; solo album Detox is slated for release this fall.

Photobucket

4. Dwayne "Lil Wayne" Carter - $20M

Not even jail could stop Lil Wayne from cracking the top five on our list. Sentenced in March to a year in the pen for weapons possession, the rapper managed to earn his hefty total from new album Rebirth, proceeds from guest appearances and a healthy dose of touring, where he grossed over $500,000 per show. Already making plans for a new album, Tha Carter IV, upon his release.

Photobucket

3. Aliuane "Akon" Thiam - $21M

Senegalese-American hip-hop singer/songwriter/producer has been profiting from a range of business ventures this year. There's his Konvict Clothing, his Pepsi soccer ad campaign and Kon Live, his Interscope-backed imprint that's home to Lady Gaga and others. Still has time for traditional musical ventures, including an international tour and a new album, Stadium Music.

Photobucket

2. Sean "Diddy" Combs - $30M

Ageless hip-hop impresario has changed name from Puff Daddy to P. Diddy to Diddy. Now, he occasionally goes by "Ciroc Obama," after his lucrative vodka joint venture with Diageo. Still shills Sean John clothing, Bad Boy Records, and more; released Last Train to Paris, his first album since 2006. Acting career on the rise after appearance in 2010 flick Get Him to the Greek, where he plays a record executive.

Photobucket

1. Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter - $63 Million

Says he's not a businessman; he's a business, man--and it's not idle boasting. Rapper-turned-mogul retains his crown as hip-hop's cash king thanks to a new album and investments in 40/40 nightclub chain, Broadway show "Fela!" and New Jersey Nets basketball team. Biggest boost comes from Blueprint 3 Tour, which grossed over $1 million per concert this year. Still makes less than wife Beyoncé (Source: Forbes.com)

FILM REVIEW: THE BABYSITTERS

Today we have another Netflix film selection The Babysitters. This film, well, how should I say isn’t about your typical babysitter tale of obnoxious, ill mannered kids that a young female high school student takes on to make a few extra dollars over the summer. This film is definitely different it takes on a life that we all suspect could happen in real life, but maybe not to this level.

The Babysitters is a film of a 17, high-school junior Shirley Lyner who is thinking about college and running a babysitting service that provides teen call girls to the dads of young children. In a long flashback, we see what brought her from being a babysitter to organizing and running the service. It starts with Michael, the father of children she baby-sits. A cup of coffee on the way home from his house, a night visit to a train yard, and one thing leads to another. Shirley can be ruthless, and tension builds when some of the clients take the girls to a mountain cabin and bring drugs. Then, one of the girls tries to freelance. Can this end well: is it a tragedy in the making? Don’t we all have secrets? Written by jhailey@hotmail.com

The Babysitters was written and directed by David Ross, produced by Kathy DeMarco, Jason Dublin, Jennifer Dublin, John Leguizamo, and Cora Olson. The cast has John Leguizamo, Katherine Waterston, Cynthia Nixon from Forensic Films 2007. (imdb)

I’m not afraid to say I enjoyed this film. And I’d have to say it was probably for its scandalous situations its characters were in, which kept the films tension alive. That “Oh shit, they’re so going to get caught” feeling you get in your gut as you watch is huge part of why this film works. And much like anything in life it goes for a time good or bad just let it ride. Morally, this film well... I didn’t watch it to be moral I watched it to be entertained. The pace of the film held up through to the end and the main characters progression stayed true as well. The ending... well who is to say how any film should end? I believe we as people go through instances in life where there is only one other person who was there and shared the experience. In the case of The Babysitters I give it 4 stars.

Please leave a comment, and follow us if you like what you’ve seen.

ARTIST/ DESIGNER PROFILE: TAZ ARNOLD a.k.a. TISA

I know a few of you out there may be familiar with artist, producer, trend setter, turned fashion designer through his work with the hip hop/R&B group Sa-Ra. Yet even more may be familiar with him for his daring, exotic fashion sense. This is Taz Arnold a.k.a. TISA.

Photobucket

Raised in the streets of L.A. Taz Arnold, as he says, "I grew up at the beach. Watts is like 10 minutes from the beach’ people don't know that. I lived like west of Watts, like Imperial and Crenshaw’ that’s literally 10 minutes from the beach on the street. I used to boogie board, go snorkeling in the ocean. My dad was a scuba diver; my mom ran on the beach everyday, like 4 miles to the marine and back and she would take me. That was a part of my growing up too, not just the hood. I'm from the hood, but muthafuckas in the hood go to the beach too…it doesn’t cost anything’ it’s free! [Laughs.]"

Photobucket

Growing up so close to the beach yet still in the "hood" Taz was a part of a surf and skate gang called the Nerdz who were up on their fashion game with brands like Maui and sons, Gothca, and T&C, to name a few. The gang was also into petty crimes like selling weed and shoplifting, but Taz was always on his fashion game. He never really got too involved, but he always found the time to procure luxury labels as Gucci, Polo, or MCM. For many as Taz says,” Growing up, MCM was how Gucci and Louis is at the top now. For people with money and young professionals like black lawyers, hip lawyers in LA, MCM rivaled Gucci and Louis Vuitton and it was something that was celebrated as an equal. Way over GUESS, Fila and everything. This is a luxury brand, a bonafide, real, authentic luxury brand when I was growing up."

Photobucket

As time past Taz was able to travel and get a better perspective of this fashion thing as he says, "Cats don't travel! They got to go to like Japan and see…there's killers in this world with this style shit…muthafuckin’ ninjas that will slice your neck quick. You think you fresh rolling up with your little Gucci, and muthafuckas up there wearing dresses and shit with beards. But they not gay, they just wearing a kilt and their shit is fresh! They sitting there hanging out with fucking Karl Lagerfeld. He’s worked with me, how the fuck are you gonna call him wack? Muthafuckas don't have their minds right. This is art, man. This shit ain't about fucking like “hip-hop rules” or no shit like that. This shit is Basquiat and Andy Warhol."

Photobucket

The time came when through his trend setting efforts he says, "I started seeing people in Japan dress like me with the bow ties, the MCM jackets with the rope chains. That’s my original style. My friends in Tokyo were looking to help me develop my brand and my aesthetic 'cause they just really appreciated the demonstration. I was designing my new line, and then my buddy Big O said, “Yo, do you wanna do MCM?” So that opportunity just came to me through Big O and a couple other cats. Cats basically presented me with that. So I started designing pieces."

Photobucket

Now this TISA movement is beginning to take hold 3 years deep as another fashion icon and artist Kanye West has been taking part as Taz continues, Fuck yeah, I feel vindicated that my boy Kanye could be influenced by this style that's original and it's free, and be brave enough to take that style on for himself and run with that ball too. To join up on that team and be like, “Yo, I'm with this too.” Like, “Yeah, I'm taking these blows with you 'cause I'm early on this with you. I've been around the world too and now I see this shit. This shit is right.”…and you know if we can get Pharrell to swag out…it's a system for dudes and chicks. It's called TI$A."

To understand this TISA movement check out the video below all in Taz's own words.

As an artist/designer I look to these bold and outspoken trend setters not to copy, but I embrace the freedom they partake in to do what you feel and go at it with all you got. So as this ARTIST/DESIGNER PROFILE: comes to a close check out more Taz TISA Arnold photos that I've posted this cat is amazing, leave comments, we love that, tell us we you think, and follow us so you can be updated on future posts. And as TAZ says your own fashion sense and style is within, you just gotta go for it and not try to be someone else.

INSPIRATION

As I watch other brands out there and research how they got started and continue to maintain, prosper, or just stay stagnant I have begun to find my favorites. Much like the story I posted awhile back about Benny Gold, I have been watching another brand called REBEL 8. Definitely a brand inspired by street and the tattoo REBEL 8 has developed overtime and in this video clip we see Joshy D the President/CEO of REBEL 8 talking about his mentor Mike Giant, what is in the name, and how his brand has developed since the beginning. (Source: hypebeast.com)

This is the kinda stuff that inspires me to further develop this brand and to see the success of this company. So enjoy the video and then leave some comments, which we love and check out our store online at zazzle.com/ableabe .

FILM REVIEW: INCEPTION

So here it is, film review for Inception and if you still haven't seen it yet, DAMN, you need to get on it. Right now in my opinion its the best film out right now. Initially seeing the previews to the film left me wondering wtf it was about, but I knew I was gonna see it. I was truly the visuals that drew me in. Much like when the Matrix hit the scene, nothing up to that point could compare. This is the situation with Inception amazing visuals and a story like none other.

Inception takes place In a world where technology exists to enter the human mind through dream invasion, a highly skilled thief is given a final chance at redemption which involves executing his toughest job till date, Inception. Dom Cobb the skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb's rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Inception was written and directed by Christopher Nolan of Dark Knight fame, produced by Christopher Nolan, with Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur, and Ellen Page as Ariadne from Warner Bros. 2010 (Source imbd.com)

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed this film, it was a real adventure. When I've talked with friends and colleagues about this film I described why this film was so magical for me and its all about the layers. Layers that we get taken into that overtime delve us deeper and deeper into an existence in the film. So for example, the first layer we have to understand is the world that Cobb and his mates live in and all its possibilities. In this case its a place where people can enter dreams, so we must learn how that is possible and how it works much like the brief tutoring Cobb gives to Ariadne.

Next, is the layer of the idea of "Inception" what is it, how is it possible, what are the dangers? All of these questions come up as we find out through character dialogue that "inception" was thought of as impossible. Yet the further we move into the move film inception is not impossible, but very dangerous if not fatal. Layer 2.

The last layer I'll talk about is the dark past of Cobb. As the film reveals bits and pieces of who Cobb is we find that he may be the only one who can lead this bunch on this journey, but will his past devour everyone who follows along with him, Layer 3.

Now mix this all and a few other ideas that I didn't touch on, but are just as valid together, with a bit of action and romance WOW! Truly impressed with Inception and that's why I give it 4.5 stars.

Much to the surprise of his audience, ‘Ye showed up at the Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, California yesterday (July 27th). He performed four songs from his forthcoming lonplayer, including “Mama’s Boyfriend”, “Lost in the World”, “Chain Heavy”, and “Sweat on My Face”. RATATAT | MySpace Music Videos

If you would need to describe Ratatat’s video for their latest “Drugs” in two words you’d probably say “smiling extras” – because this is what the video consists of at first sight. However, this is not the whole deal regarding this LP4-clip. The shown characters turn extra-creepy once their images are stretched thus giving a blatant connotation to the songs title.
