NETFLIX & CHILL 39

A female drives a van through the roads and streets of Scotland seducing lonely men. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

UNDER THE SKIN is based on the novel by Michel Faber, Directed by Jonathan Glazer, and written by Walter Campbell and Jonathan Glazer. I had heard a lot of buzz about this being a phenomenal film that everyone should see at least once. I realized what they were getting at upon seeing it as it has a very ambiguous storyline that would take at least a second viewing to draw out the meaning of this film. I felt personally the pace of the film drew you into the life of the alien like main character seductively taking you deeper and deeper into what ultimately was the victim’s demise. Whether the ending warps up the entire thing with a bow I think is not the point, but rather it leaves room or the viewer to come to their own conclusion. Outside of that it is a very well made film that showcases some very picturesque landscapes that would be amazing seen on a movie screen. So as for UNDER THE SKIN I give it 3 stars.

Louis and Jack have been friends since forever, so how could anything as lame as adulthood change that? But Louis's first adorable attempts at grown-folk business are increasingly at odds with Jack's ceaseless quest for new damns not to give. One hot summer day, Louis makes plans with his new friend Andrew, and Jack refuses to get left behind, both metaphorically and literally. Twenty-four hours later, everything has changed. CRONIES is written, directed, and produced by Michael Larnell and executive produced by Spike Lee. All I can say is this feels like a lot of my favorite films in one. Whether it is because my love of character driven stories of friendship and loyalty, films shot in black and white, or just that it is a story about inner city life. CRONIES for me was definitely an interesting look. I can see how for some this film may not be everything, as there weren’t great action sequences or the fact is was shot in black and white, but I thoroughly enjoyed this film. So for CRONIES I give it 5 stars.

In 1989, in the east of Texas, Ann Dane overhears a noise during the night and awakes her husband Richard Dane. He picks up his gun and stumbles with a burglar in the living room and accidentally shoots and kills the intruder. He is identified by the police as the wanted criminal Freddy Russell, but Richard is affected by the incident. Richard goes to the cemetery to see Freddy's burial and his father Ben Russell, who is also a criminal on parole, talks to Richard and asks for his son. Richard brings his son from the school and meets his wife at the police station, but the police inspector Ray Price cannot do anything to help him. Soon Richard finds that someone has broken in his house and the police officers stake out the place. However Ben breaks in the house but escapes. Ray calls Richard to tell him that Ben was arrested in Mexico and the case is closed. While leaving the station, he sees a picture of Freddy Russell and he realizes that he is not the burglar. Richard ... Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

COLD IN JULY is directed by Jim Mickle, written by Nick Damici and Jim Mickle, produced by Rene Bastian, Adam Folk, Linda Moran, and, Marie Savare. This is a film that takes you one way and then you then you realize you are in the middle of a complex situation. The unfolding of the story and the development of the main character I found very interesting and compelling. My initial thoughts of the film after seeing the trailer lead me to believe certain truths about the characters involved, but as I watched I was further entertained than I was lead to think I was. So for COLD IN JULY I give it 3 ½ stars.

The tale of an outlaw who escapes from prison and sets out across the Texas hills to reunite with his wife and the daughter he has never met. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

AIN’T THEM BODIES SAINTS is written and directed by David Lowery. If felt this film was a likeable slow moving noir like crime thriller. There were moments of ambiguity throughout the film as to the set of events that actually set things into motion. I think the ambiguity plays well within the way the story was told. I felt the characters we believable, as well as the actors, which played them. The pace like I had mentioned, had a methodical and deliberate unfolding, although the ending of the film wasn’t a surprise. That simple aspect made for an interesting lead up, but not much real anticipation. So for THEM BODIES AIN’T SAINTS I give it 3 stars.

NETFLIX & CHILL #35

After Iggy's long-time girlfriend is murdered and the whole town agrees he is the killer, he awakens one morning with horns and the townspeople soon confess their sins. Once knowing the sins of the people, he is facing the true killer of his beloved girlfriend. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

HORNS is directed by Alexandre Aja, written by Keith Bunin, and produced by Alexandre Aja, Riza Aziz, Joey McFarland and Cathy Schulman. This was for me an interestingly told love story. A little good a little bad. It was definitely an interesting concept that really drove the action in the film other than the clunky who done it detective story. I would assume that by trying to make the film so unique it lost track of how the symbolism they used distracted from the intent of the film. So as for HORNS I give it 3 stars. Enjoy!
