MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #218

Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a once-successful New York gems dealer whose gambling addiction has left his family and career in shambles and his hundreds of thousands in debt. Always looking for the next big bet, Howard thinks he finally hit it big when he discovers a rare uncut rock of Ethiopian gems, with a very interested high-profile buyer. But the closer Howard gets to finally winning big, the more he is forced to realize he can't keep running from the consequences of his actions. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

UNCUT GEMS (2019) Directed by Benny & Josh Safdie, written by Ronald Bronstein Benny & Josh Safdie, and produced by Scot Rudin. From the moment I saw  GOOD TIMES, the first film I had seen by the Safdie Brothers, I knew I needed to watch this one as well. Furthermore, seeing Adam Sandler cast in a movie, not usually his genre, made the prospect of seeing this to rise to another level.

Upon watching it, I was caught up in the frantic world of Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler), and all that encompassed it. Each moment of the film is crammed with situations you wish Howard would just make the right choice to get out of his own way, but he just seems to dig himself deeper. The pacing of the film keeps you on the edge of your seat nearly at all times, which can be stressful but adds to the film's journey. Much of the cast are non-actors playing characters that reflect the roles they play in real life, giving the film a level of authenticity.

In the End: UNCUT GEM delivered a frantic and uneasy story full of lavishness and luxury, furthering my opinion of The Safdie Brothers as legitimate filmmakers that I enjoy watching their films. So I give the film a 4 of 5 stars.

DOCTOR & NURSE

The other nurses warned her about him, well at least the female ones. She had shown up out of nowhere coming from one of those prompt care facilities working that beat for nearly two years fresh out of nursing school she entered that life bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, but over time the luster of the life faded, and now she was yearning for more. This caused her to apply to the hospital, looking for some excitement she was planted in the ER.

The luck of the draw, as she was already a night owl and the difference from one hour to the next excited her. Within a matter of days shadowing a nurse named Pepper is when she got to meet the doctor, the nurses had warned her about, and he was as good looking as they come. Thick curly blonde hair, tall with broad shoulders, and deep dark brown eyes. When he spoke, he spoke with a British Essex accent a tough part of England that took no gruff. That exact night is when she met Dr. Livermore. She saw how he commanded the ER as a patient had come in with a life-threatening knife wound that was bleeding profusely. She watched ready to assist at a moment, yet he was able to not only stop the bleeding and suture the wound without much of a fuss more than the frantic wife worried about her husband.

She didn't actually speak with the doctor till days after that night where she was now fully assisting on a slow night with Pepper out that night. She found in the still of the ER a moment to introduce herself and share in a cup of coffee with the Dr. There was a policy about co-working relationships, but the word was if you keep it quiet and the staff behind the desk don't find out it was possible.

She didn't go into this thinking she wanted him his charms, and pure unbridled sex appeal convinced her of that. Again, she heard the stories about him, a bit of a womanizer, but she let it go in one ear and out the other. She felt she could put the brakes on at any minute like a drug addict thinks they can still keep the same friends. She was caught and didn't even know it mesmerized by his gaze.

Shit hit the fan one night when she was working side by side with him. They were saving a woman's life who had been nearly drowned dead with no pulse and no breath. Working in tandem the attraction grew to its utmost and to have the woman live sealed her fate as not more than 30 minutes later she made it to his office and she put her cards on the table as did he by shutting the blinds and making space on his desk to engage in the passion that had been burning in them for some time.

From Academy Award® Winner Spike Lee comes a new joint: the story of four African American Vets - Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) - who return to Vietnam. Searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader (Chadwick Boseman) and the promise of buried treasure, our heroes, joined by Paul's concerned son (Jonathan Majors), battle forces of Man and Nature - while confronted by the lasting ravages of The Immorality of The Vietnam War. Written by Netflix (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

DA 5 BLOODS (2020) Directed by Spike Lee, written by Danny Bilson, Paul De Meo, Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee, produced by Beatriz Levin is a journey of a film where each minute is either informing, inspiring or revealing.

Having been directed by Spike Lee I would expect nothing less as DA 5 BLOODS seemingly came at a time where change and revolution are in dire need. Upon watching the film I found the cast to be a list of black actors who have been in some notable films, Delroy Lindo possibly the most familiar face had an incredible performance here. With an almost 3 hour film, the pacing was great keeping me intrigued throughout. I

In the End: I found DA 5 BLOODS to be a very well film delivering some truths about the Vietnam war and the African American experience like only Spike Lee could do. So I give this film 4 of 5 stars.

THE CONFESSION

She had been distraught all day she told him. She didn't know whom else to turn to, all along apologizing for bothering him at this hour. He was gracious. Letting her know his phone and door was open to her at any hour. She walked into his darkened apartment, it was the wee hours of the morning, and she smelt like she had just chain-smoked a pack of cigarettes and tried to cover the smell with an inexpensive perfume. They sat on his sofa; she sat at one end while he sat at the other still in his boxer briefs and a white tee.

She let him know the root of her anguish, which was being past over for an internship that she had been looking forward to since the previous year. The interviewer made it sound like her acceptance would be a sure thing. As it turned out, she was qualified, but there weren't enough openings to get her in this go-round. He watched her with caring tired eyes, as she continued to tell him how set her mind was. It's hard to say what goes on in one's heart and soul daily, but it was 3:33 am, and he had to be at work that morning yet he found it within himself to hear her out.

They had dated in the past. This young woman at his doorstep, soon calling it off the feeling she had met her soul mate Estaban, a transplant from Peru with a sexy accent, and was ready to move in together and marry him after only 5 months. The reality of her lousy decision eventually hit hard, and everything blew up in her face as she caught Estaban cheating in their bed with their downstairs neighbor. Even at that time whom did she seek out to console her aching heart, it was he. He also listened then, biting his tongue not to curse her out knowing she had a deceptive way of turning it around on him making it his fault.

He continued to listen. Still, with visions of his early morning visitor nude, she shed her black leather biker jacket unbuttoning her white blouse and sitting on her side of the sofa having kicked off her heels and removed her jeans sitting in black lace panties in an attempt to get comfortable. The two sat talking as rays of early morning light crept through the splits in the blinds. He had been here before with her, yet he wondered why she was back now. They hadn't spoken in a while, having only seen her in passing as they worked in the same office building. He was wondering why him and why now? He wasn't entirely over her, dreaming of a moment like this where she'd grovel asking him to take her back, but he wasn't a pushover.  He was a changed man, much more adept at handling her intense mood swings and passive-aggressive personality granted he'd get the chance.

She got up from the sofa and began to make coffee; still familiar with his apartment layout she knew where everything was. He watched her from the couch in the adjacent living room admiring her allure. She was a beautiful woman well endowed with smoky, exotic features that spoke to her middle eastern descent. Maybe he did still want her, but he'd never say it as she was the type with a blunt tongue fearing she'd say something that would again send him to counseling.

Maybe he was a pushover? If he was, well then she was crazy-making the good times great, something romance novels were made of and the bad times a pit of despair. Living and loving her was a rollercoaster ride that deep down he missed. Yet again, having grown from the experience, he couldn't let her know that she needed to realize what she had given up and honestly ask for it back hoping she had learned from the experience. Through her pale blue and sparkling grey eyes, she looked at him from across the room asking him if he wanted a cup of coffee. He nodded and began to get up. She told him to sit down she'd bring it to him. "Two scopes of brown sugar?' She questioned, remembering from their time in the past. She poured the hot coffee into matching black coffee mugs from Denny's, a reminder from an incredible night out together having picked them up on a whim.

She brought him the cup of coffee and then he admired the sensual switch in her walk as she moved back to the kitchen. He smiled with the first hot sip. She stared at him then proclaimed he was the best thing she ever had and threw it away.  Not getting the internship really made her realize that. As without someone to share in the good and the bad times she saw the importance of what she had let go of. She had grown to find stability and understanding more attractive than good looks and an accent. She loved and missed how she could fly off the handle, and he'd still be there waiting to comfort her. Within herself, she found how to deal with her swings of emotion, and if she got the chance she'd find a way to not be so volatile.

His heart jumped, he wasn't expecting that revelation. She then repeated it. He heard her the first time, yet the second time was even sweeter. She stood at the side of the kitchen counter holding sensually looking down bashfully waiting for what he'd say. Gradually becoming aroused his insides sparked with desire. "Why are you telling me this?" He questioned. She looked up from the floor at him "Cause I want you back, how can I get you back?" Feeling she needed to explain more she nervously rephrased. Then he stopped her.

The glorious early morning light backlit her from the kitchen window causing her skin to glow. She stood there on her tiptoes biting her lip exposing herself enticingly dreadfully anticipating the answer.  The guy with work in the morning hadn't taken his eyes off her since she had said what she said. He set his coffee on the coffee table next to the sofa. He got up and at an unsure pace understanding what he was about to embark on having gotten the hallelujah sign from her walked to his room leaving her alone in the kitchen. She then set down her coffee on the kitchen counter taking a beat understanding what she had set in motion. Her emotions high and on the verge, her newly mature self then took the reigns guiding her to follow him pushing the door to his room closed behind her as she entered.
