MEETING A CELEBRITY

Hugo's day was going rather well. He was ahead of schedule, and the sun was shining adding to the joyous feeling of the day. Hugo was a bicycle carrier delivering packages from office to office or wherever the bag needed to be dropped within the city limits.

He had been at this work for nearly a year, and things were looking up for him as he had saved up enough money to take his vacation to Thailand. This came about from a strict budget and taking on a few extra side jobs like house sitting and walking dogs.

Today as it was had Hugo ahead of schedule and was making his way on his last stop before lunch. Up ahead of him on his path, he saw the roads were being blocked off, and there were tons of paparazzi flocking around being familiar with the ways of Los Angeles he figured a celebrity was en route or already on location, which fueled the feeding frenzy of the paparazzi.

As he drew closer, he saw he was partially right as the paps were there for celebrities, but the frenzy was to take photos of the actors on a live shoot. Upon hitting the intersection at the epicenter of the commotion, he knew he could bypass the cluster jam of people and still stay ahead of schedule by dropping his last package before his break.

He took a sharp right moving up a few blocks and crossed over through an alleyway that put him at the back exit of the office he needed to be. He secured his bike and walked in. He needed to reach the 5th floor taking an elevator and walked out onto the 5th floor to deliver his package to the receptionist.

After a matter of a quick signature and a bit of small talk, he headed back to the elevator with a giddy-up in his step. He hit the button and then hit it again before the elevator doors opened after another beat. The doors opened to reveal a lone man standing there. To Hugo, the older gentleman looked familiar, but he couldn't place him. He saw the man was also headed to the lobby, so he stood there waiting for the doors to close and send them down to the front desk.

Hugo nodded cordially and stood next to the man puzzled by his strong resemblance. Floor after floor in an awkward silence of the elevator other than the generic Muzik playing. The two men stood firm with each drop only Hugo seemingly became annoyed with himself feeling he was a real people person and always could put a name with a face.

Then just before the elevator hit the lobby floor it came to him turning to look at the older gentleman saying "Your East Clintwood!" The older man smiled as the elevator jostled to a complete stop and the doors opened with a ding. The man turned back to Hugo and said in a rustic gnarly voice "Sorry son, I think you got the wrong man." and walked out stoically. Hugo followed swearing it was him feeling he had taken an elevator ride with an A-list celebrity only to realize much later that he had misspoken and missed his chance to truly meet Clint Eastwood.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #211

After five years in prison, guards lead Nolan to his freedom. But Nolan's ticket out came courtesy of ratting on his former boss. A death sentence for any man. His goal: find Lena and Amy-his ex and their five-year-old daughter he's never met-and get them out of the city, to a new life together, before the ghosts of his past can track him down and kill him. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

THE GHOST WHO WALKS (2019) is directed by Cody Stokes, written by Cody Stokes & Ben Bostick, and produced by Daniel Gartner & Frank Mosley. Upon watching the trailer, I felt I was watching an exciting redemption story only to find out that when actually watching the film, it was something entirely different.

What I can say is that THE GHOST WHO WALKS pacing is excellent, keeping you intrigued throughout. I would even say that the film didn’t have much of a stylish approach in how it was shot, but it did enough to keep the look and feel of the film energetic.

In the End: THE GHOST WHO WALKS was an exciting film, with a likable main character and story, but tough to say more than that. So I give the film 3 of 5 stars.

JUST A LONG DAY

He sat at his booth in the diner, barely touching his food. He was sunken down, looking out the window and scrolling through a conversation of texts on his phone. From looking at him, you could tell there was something wrong. It wasn't like him to not touch the food he loved cheeseburgers. Yet there he sat like the loneliest man in the world having a tough day.

It started from the moment he got up running late for work and banging his foot on the end of his bed. He then proceeded to only get caught up in traffic and be even later. As the day progressed at lunch looking for a pick me up, he got a hot coffee only to spill on himself to which he still wore the stain that fervently would not wash out before a group meeting where it was him giving a brief update on the accounts he was working on.  Without a blazer on hand, he gave the talk looking like a bum.

Later on, that day as if the day for him couldn't have gotten any worse Shelly, a woman he had taken on a few dates from the same office he worked cornered him to let him know she was going back to Melvin and give it another try. With the day going as it was, he wasn't surprised it happened; he knew not to mess with her; she didn't know what she wanted. Yet he asked her out in the back of his mind thinking if they got focused, he'd have something to flaunt in Melvin's face. Melvin was the guy everyone hated. The guy born with a silver spoon in his mouth, good looking, with no real sense of the world unless it revolved around him. So good ridden to that he felt let her be Melvin's problem.

As the day wound down on another work week and it was reaching the end of the day. Everyone was talking about his or her plans for the weekend. He was looking for some way to get himself out of this funk he started scrolling through his contacts looking for friends to hang out with when he came upon a text conversation that stopped him cold.

He needed something to lift his spirits and decided to treat himself to a meal. It had to be something special his favorite meal was a Cheeseburger and steak cut fries. With that in mind, he went to the best place in town for just that. This joint he was heading to stacked the cheese on the patty as it finished grilling and that the cheese would melt to perfection and become super gooey and in the places where the cheese would melt down the sides on to the grill it would be a crunchy masterpiece. His mouth watered as he thought about it on the way over. He pulled up into the parking lot to find the placed closed for renovations. That as practically the final straw. A significant slap in the face. "Can this day fuckin' end already!" he exclaimed. A transient man shopping in a dumpster nearby yelled at him to keep the racket down. Defeated in even in the ability to cheer him up and have to vent his frustrations, he got back in his car and drove around to partly clear his mind and look for another cheeseburger he could dine one.

In the back of his mind, he recalled the back and forth text messages from a contact named Charity the Redhead. Finally, he decided on a standard diner that advertised they had a "fantastic" cheeseburger. He pulled into their parking lot and went inside. He'd expect it to be busier than it was, but it was practically empty. He decided to stay weary from his catastrophe of a day. He just wanted some type of reprieve and the cheeseburger, steak fries, and a beer. An older redheaded waitress with a gruff voice met him. She showed him to a booth that had a great view of the main street he pulled off. She offered him a menu to which he refused commenting; he wanted the "fantastic" cheeseburger that he saw advertised in the window. She seemed to know what he was talking about and then asked him what he wanted to drink? "Can I get a beer?" She nodded and gave a shortlist of what they had available. He made his selection, and she left to place his order. A brief moment later, she came back with a bottle of some brand, but not what he asked for. "Sorry we were out of everything else, will this do?" she questioned him. Understanding this as the day he was living, he settled with the selection. He popped the top and took the first sip and disappointment read all over his face.

In the process of a long day that had tested his strength, he took a minute to just relax. He sat at the table eyes closed and began to just breath. Taking in a breath and letting it out. It was as if he was trying to meditate and just clear out all the negative mojo accumulated from the day where nothing was going right. A thought his meditating mind focused on was hoping that cheeseburger would or could be up to the standards he was used to as it would help even out the heck of a day he was already having.

He took a look at the order of cooks on the line, wondering if he could decipher from their expressions how this cheeseburger was going to turn out. He continued to wait to flip through the text conversation that had been taking up brain space since leaving the office. As he looked up from his phone for a moment, he saw his older waitress walking in his direction. She had a smile on her face and what looked like a cheeseburger and steak fries on a serving tray. She placed the plate on the table in front of him. Visually appetizing, but he wasn't going to say anything till he got a bite. He took a taste and it wasn't as bad as the beer, but it was no way great or the touch he needed to get out of this funk. He sat back, picking at the food on his plate till eventually, he decided it was time to call it a day. You can't win them all, he thought. He paid his check and walked out.

He got in his car and just drove around his town, watching couples on a date night and having fun. He drove as if he was in search of something when he pulled into an open lot to just sightsee. He watched the lights, the cars driving by, and the people out on a Friday night. He thought to himself, life wasn't treating him well that day. Looking at the coffee stain on his shirt, he sat on the bumper and hood of his car and just watched the world go by.

If he were honest, the day would be ok if he just had someone to share the mess of a day living through it, and they'd let him know he was ok. He looked at his phone the text conversation he had been going through all day with the contact name Charity the read head stayed in his conscious. The look on his face told more of the story behind the texts. He eventually found the nerve to make the call. The phone rang a few times till there was a pickup on the other end. "Hello," a sweet voice answered. "Hey Charity, this is Alex," he replied, reserved.

"Oh, hey Alex, how have you been?"
"I'm alright, I've had better days."
"I'm glad you called, what are you up to?"
"I was just about to ask you, it's just been a long day."

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #210

After Portland slacker John Callahan (Joaquin Phoenix) nearly loses his life in a car accident, the last thing he intends to do is give up drinking. But when he reluctantly enters treatment - with encouragement from his girlfriend (Rooney Mara) and a charismatic sponsor (Jonah Hill) - Callahan discovers a gift for drawing edgy, irreverent newspaper cartoons that develop a national following and grant him a new lease on life. Based on a true story, this poignant, insightful and often funny drama about the healing power of art is adapted from Callahan's autobiography and directed by two-time Oscar® nominee Gus Van Sant. Jack Black, Carrie Brownstein, Beth Ditto, and Kim Gordon also star. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Sometimes you find a movie that seems to speak to you and for some reason, I feel (2018) DON’T WORRY HE WON’T GET FAR ON FOOT was speaking to me. To better understand my point of view is in the sense that I was in a car accident like the character in the movie and ended up a quadriplegic. Upon seeing John Callahan the main character played by Joaquin Phoenix and seeing his recovery it reminded me of mine. Furthermore, the connection John Callahan had to his artwork also reminded me of how my life was improved when I found art as an outlet for my expression. And yes, of course, my life and the character John Callahan life are not exact parallels, but watching this film sent me on a trip that I wasn’t quite expecting and yet enjoyed. I also feel Joaquin’s performance here is just as good or comparable to his performance in JOKER with some other recognizable faces in the cast. So in the end, and I am sure my score may be a little biased, but I give HE WON’T GET FAR ON FOOT 4.5 of 5 stars.

THE PACT

But you said... Thomas saw the start of a comment from Rosa and stopped her dead mid-sentence, as he knew where she was headed. He stood up from the sofa in Rosa's apartment, and emphatically said: "No, no!" Rosa was taken aback and recoiled back away from Thomas on the couch. "What is it? she replied.

The two had been talking about the state of their relations. Seeing each other for over a year and a half of courtship, Rosa questioned if getting married was in the cards. She wasn't getting any younger, and she did want to have kids as her biological clock was clicking so loud it was a surprise Thomas didn't hear it. Rosa was of that age where a woman has sites on having children needing to negotiate her life in such a way so as not to spend her childbearing years with an incompatible mate.

Thomas, in her view, would be a satisfying donor if not a good father if he chose to stay with her. He came from a family line of healthy males with no significant health issues. He was employed and even showed bursts of ambition for certain things. All of this made Thomas an excellent candidate to have a child with.

The most pivotal talk the two had had on the state of their relationship happened on one of their dates that ended up at a soft service ice cream parlor. The day had gone well except Thomas was on edge as for a trait that Thomas saw in Rosa that annoyed him, which was Rosa's complaining about the food or the service or both. That day it was both. So as they left the restaurant to get some air and talk, making their way to the ice cream parlor, the topic arose and continued on.

Thomas was honest maybe, even more, realistic this time than ever before. He shared that it was too early for marriage. And since they had been having unprotected sex since the first day they met, having a child could be upon them sooner than expected, it made sense. Rosa knew Thomas enjoyed sex with her knowing she at times, could be insatiable, and he liked that, but sex for pleasure and sex to procreate seemed like two separate things.

Upon arriving at the parlor the same night, the talk became even more honest and lead to a pact that maybe was a little misleading, but seemed to come from the right place in their relationship. The agreement was this, they'd put all talk about marriage and kids off for a year, and if they were still together, happily and even more in love, then they should make those next steps reality. The pact seemed a little hollow and definitely not spontaneous, but with the talk over Hawaiian chocolate toffee soft serve for Thomas and strawberry for Rosa, their resolution felt final.

Now a year later, the time had passed quickly, and the two were still living separately engaged in what appeared to be one long relationship. Thomas was promoted and making more money, and it seemed the stars were aligning to their pact. Yet something was up, and as they made out on Rosa's sofa, they paused their action to address the anniversary of their agreement. Rosa then spoke to Thomas without much ease in blurting out that she was pregnant, gaining an astounding look upon Thomas's face.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #209

In a world without anonymity or crime, a detective meets a woman who threatens their security.
(Courtesy of Internet Database)

As a significant fan of the film noir genre, I found (2018) ANON to be a futuristic take on this look. I was highly intrigued by this film upon viewing as it took on a stylish look in modern society. As for the story, it plays as a detective murder mystery, which for me was not as taut a thriller as I’d like, but entertaining none the less. Clive Owen, who played the main character Sal Frieland had a good performance, but in the end, I was hoping for more from the film and its actors. So for ANON, I give it 3 stars of 5.

HIS GIRLFRIEND'S DIARY

Traffic was steady up from Santa Barbara, but as Tory looked at his watch, he saw he had made some perfect time on the trip up to the city of Chico where his girlfriend Rose was staying for a summer internship. They had been together for several months. All while planning on this internship in the middle of their dating. Tory knew this and still perused her laboriously, knowing they'd be apart from the entire summer as he had a full-time job at a film studio in Santa Barbara. The last time they were together, they had an incredible night out, which ended back at his apartment and had Rose staying overnight.

Tory turned down the street to Rose's apartment, happy to see her as the texting, and phone conversations helped only so much and never would suffice over being in person. He parked his car, not seeing Rose's white Jetta, assuming she had yet to make it home. Grabbing his bags and heading up to her apartment. She left a key for him under the hide a key outside her door, and he got access.

Upon stepping inside, he saw the place ransacked, or she had yet to tidy up the area for his arrival. It looked lived in having magazines piled up, books, and papers all about the situation. Tory set down his bags and took advantage of her absence and did a little cleaning up for her and himself as well, as he was the type of guy who liked his place a certain way.

Not knowing how she was grouping things, he tried to place items so as she could find them. He continued into the kitchen and washed a few dishes that were in the sink. He then came upon a black book resembling a bible. Still, with no such markings on the cover sitting next to the microwave not knowing what it was, he took a look wondering if in her time in Northern California Rose had picked up some form of religion.

Upon reading, he realized he had stumbled onto Rose's diary seeing that each page came with a new date or entry date. Some of the stuff he read was rather mundane. He read an entry talking about her boss at the internship, some girl who she had run into, which reminded her of someone she once knew.

To his mind, this was all innocent stuff, so he flipped to the date that they had last seen each other just wondering, by chance, if she'd have anything provocative at all to say knowing what had gone down during that visit. When he found it thinking to himself that he shouldn't be reading it, but more to the fact that maybe what he'd learned would change his mind about her. Still, he pressed on and continued to read. The entry documented the night they had commenting about the dinner and how she felt about how he looked at the waitress, which showed she was a little jealous. She said on the night out and how she was regretting in some way, still going on with the internship. Then she dropped it as the rest of the entry went on about how they made out and how he performed. Tory stopped cold, knowing what may lie ahead how it could affect how he acted with her in the future. The suspense was killing him knowing was one thing, but now knowing wasn't at this point expectable.

What he read blew his mind as she enjoyed his tenderness in foreplay while at the same time his ability to get rough with her in the middle, but what she liked most was how he ate her ass, calling it her "Boom booty." She went on to explain how the tongue twirls and gentle nibbling, and sucking got her so wet. Tory figured this read like a dirty romance novel if he had ever read one, but she didn't stop there as she delved into how depraved it was of him even to venture that way while he was there. A bit of accomplishment welled up in his manhood as he continued to read more about what he could have done more of leading up to the one thing she'd hope he'd do the next time they met up.

He read with intense intrigue wanting to know what it was she was so desperately wanted from him when the front door of the apartment door opened, revealing his girlfriend Rose home from her internship duties. Tory flung the diary across the room, landing in the corner behind a shelf. He froze, thinking she caught him, but she was awestruck that he was there and had tidied the place up a bit. They then embraced kissing like a couple that hadn't seen each other in months.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #208

In 1979, James Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, "Remember This House." The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only 30 completed pages of this manuscript. Filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. Written by Jwelch5742 (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

With a bold title like (2016) I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, I knew this film had to carry with it a bold message. As the film takes a look back at the turbulent 1950s and the Civil rights movement of that time. This film/documentary put together some of the dots for me on how people, in particular celebrity black folk, felt and dealt with the untimely death of the figureheads of the movement. I also felt hearing the words and interviews of James Baldwin were fantastic as he spoke eloquently of the black struggle in the face of his white detractors. So for I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO, I give it 3.5 stars of 5.

THE UNREAD STORY

Mr. Halsey rushed to pack his book bag and head home for the day. It was homecoming week. Knowing his workload and the numerous papers to correct he'd miss a deal of the festivities happening on campus. The big game included if he didn't hit the grindstone and get some of these things in the completed pile. He also couldn't take on any new work fearing one of his colleagues would ask him for a favor being in the same boat.

As that thought passed through his mind, Malcolm, one of Mr. Halsey's 4th-period students, entered his classroom dressed in his football practice gear with a beaming smile on his face. Mr. Halsey confounded by the visit completely stopped what he was doing to address Malcolm as he walked through the empty classroom up to his desk.

Malcolm then handed Mr. Halsey a paper he had written. Mr. Halsey then questioned Malcolm to what this paper was to which Malcolm refreshed his memory by saying, "This is that story you told me I should write after that last assignment." The statement flashed into Mr. Halsey's mind. Malcolm one of the more reserved students in his 4th period. Wrote and read aloud to the class a ruckus story that captivated everyone having them laughing and showing a talent that Malcolm seldom revealed. Mr. Halsey was impressed, to say the least, which lead to the comments he gave Malcolm not thinking he'd actually do it.

Mr. Halsey looked at the paper in Malcolm's hand. Knowing his current predicament freezing not wanting to add to his possibly insurmountable list of things to do already. Malcolm explained he dressed for practice so he could milk every last minute writing in the library to complete the paper before having to be on the field. Malcolm was now showing foresight and an added effort based on a critique that obviously sparked his creative sensibilities. Now seeing Malcolm's talent budding, he didn't know how to react but sticking to his guns looking at his bag. He then told Malcolm he was glad for the effort to complete the story yet he couldn't take on any more work at the moment.

The proud smile on Malcolm's face vanished, and a confused look replaced it like the hand holding the paper dropped to his side. In the now awkward silence of the classroom, Mr. Halsey went on to rattle off more reasons why he couldn't take the paper doubling down on his non-acceptance of the work. This only further put Malcolm in a somber state puzzled by Mr. Halsey's decision, slowly backing away from the teacher's desk heading to the door. Malcolm's demeanor more reflected now what he'd shown in Mr. Halsey's class on day-to-day. Malcolm then mumbled something intelligible and left for practice seeing it was just turning 5pm.

A brief moment passed before Mr. Halsey continued to pack his book bag and headed to his car. From where he parked, he could see the football team breaking into practice. Mr. Halsey could even see Malcolm #25 his shoulders slumped and a lack of bounce in his step, hoping this would not affect his performance in the big game. This was when Mr. Halsey realized the power he had as a teacher to help shape the minds and lives of his students. His drive home only continued to reveal to him this truth, as past student names and faces came to him that he saw attitudes changes when he showed an added interest in the work they did.

Once the bitter nail-biting homecoming big game loss came and went the incident lay dormant, nearly forgotten till one day, Ms. Pentz caught Mr. Halsey in the teacher's lounge and began heaping praise on him. Mr. Halsey confused as to why listened as Ms. Pentz explained that she had been introduced to Malcolm and his writing. This was news to Mr. Halsey, who sat up straight. Ms. Pentz went on about how great it was that he encouraged Malcolm to keep writing. She hoped he would understand her request to have him transferred to her 4th-period creative writing class as his talent demanded he works at a higher level. Mr. Halsey didn't know how to react feeling as if he had missed out on something extraordinary, but reassured, as someone was there to pick up the ball where he clearly had fumbled it.
