MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #130

Bradley Thomas is a hard workingman. After him and his wife's miscarriage they admit the spark isn't there anymore and decide to have a baby. After being fired from his job, he turns to his friend who hires him as a drug dealer. A trade goes bad and he ends up in prison, the only problem is that a gang has kidnapped his wife and they will do an experimental operation on the baby unless Thomas kills one of the inmates in cell block 99. Bradley will not stop at anything until his wife is safe again. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)
I don’t quite know how this film got past me, but I did see BONE TOMAHAWK the director S. Craig Zahler’s first film.  In that sense I was familiar with his style, but not quite ready for the whole BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 experience. This film star Vince Vaughn who is usually most known for his comedic roles in films, but BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 is no laughing matter. Done in a manner of films from the 70’s we are taken on a journey that soon unravels on a dark downward spiral. Some of the elements outside of Vince Vaughn’s acting performance that make this film so good is the pacing of the film, which gives you a sense of impending doom as you progress. The other element is the fight scenes in which you see everything and the fighting is not heightened by quick cuts and editing tricks. I furthermore also enjoyed the simplistic and straightforward story. So for BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 I give it 4 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #129

Amidst a wild flat meadow encircled by an Edenic lush forest, a couple have cocooned themselves in a secluded mansion that was not so long ago burned to the ground, devotedly restored by the supportive wife. Within this safe environment, the once famous middle-aged poet husband is desirous of creating his magnum opus; however, he seems unable to break out of the persistent creative rut that haunts him. Then, unexpectedly, a knock at the door, the sudden arrival of a cryptic late-night visitor and his intrusive wife will stimulate the writer's stagnant imagination. Little by little, much to the perplexed wife's surprise, the more chaos he lets in their haven, the better for his punctured male ego. In the end, will this incremental mess blemish, irreparably, the couple's inviolable sanctuary? Written by Nick Riganas (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Having been blown away by the first few films of Darren Aronofsky I patiently waited for his next feature, that being MOTHER!. I didn’t necessarily know what to expect, but I had heard some things, which forced me to be ready for anything. Upon watching much like his other film Requiem of a Dream I was lulled into a sense of comfortability and then all hell broke loose. In MOTHER! though much of the visual and storytelling came from symbols that the writer/director used in an allegoric fashion to tell this expansive story. Several viewings seem to be the norm to grasp the real story being told so be patient and keep your eyes open. If all else fails go to YouTube and watch a video on MOTHER! explained. So for MOTHER! I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #128

Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok, the destruction of his home world and the end of Asgardian civilization, at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Not necessarily one for the factory of super hero films coming out be they Marvel or DC, but I gave THOR: RAGNAROK a spin on a whim. Upon taking a look I was pleasantly surprised as the feel I was getting was a bit irreverent even somewhat taking itself somewhat not so serious. I also felt THOR: RAGNAROK had an interesting interaction between Marvel characters, that also for one not so wrapped up in character timelines, felt made for an entertaining story. So for THOR: RAGNAROK 3.75 stars of 5.
