REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS follows two immigrant brothers Sonny (Justin Chon) and Steven (Kevin Wu) who survive the impoverished despair of New York in the 1980s by joining Chinatown gang "The Green Dragons". The brothers quickly rise up the ranks, drawing the unwanted attention of hard-boiled city cops. REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS was a selection due to my love for movies on the gangster lifestyle. In this case it was the Triad or more specifically a story based on true events. Upon viewing it I waxed nostalgic as the film made me think of other gangster flicks like GOODFELLAS or CASINO. I felt the story was the strongest aspect of the film, as the actor portals seemed a bit lacking. Furthermore the stylistic choices used in telling this story were a bit light hoping for a dynamic view of the early times of the TRIAD in America. So for REVENGE OF THE GREEN DRAGONS I give 3.5 stars out of 5.

Baby is a young and partially hearing-impaired getaway driver who can make any wild move while in motion with the right track playing. However, just when Baby thinks he is finally free and clear to have his own life with his new girlfriend, Debora, Doc coerces him back for another job. Now saddled with a crew of thugs too violently unstable to keep to Doc's plans, Baby finds himself and everything he cares for in terrible danger. To survive and escape the coming maelstrom, it will take all of Baby's skill, wits and daring, but even on the best track, can he make it when life is forcing him to face the music? The previews to BABY DRIVER sold me into the fact that at some point I’d need to see this film. I don’t know if it was the characters, the premise, or the ultimate love story that would possibly develop with in the film, but two and a half minutes of clips did it. Upon seeing the film I was please this is definitely a unique film unlike any film I’ve seen. It is also that the film seems to come from an honest or pure place admits bank robbers, gun and violence, which I think makes it more enjoyable. So for BABY DRIVER I give it 4.5 of 5

A young street artist, Danny, in East Los Angeles is caught between his father's obsession with lowrider car culture, his ex-felon brother and his need for self-expression. Danny puts his graffiti artist skills to use and paints murals on the hoods of lowrider cars to help his brother win an upcoming competition.

I don’t quite remember how I got turned on to the film LOWRIDERS, but when it ended up in my mailbox I had a moment of excitement ready to take a look at a lifestyle much different that my own.  Upon viewing it I found things that I could directly relate to as this film focused on family relationship or more specifically father and son relations. In a dramatic sense this film was rather predictable yet at the sametime the setting of being held in a lowrider lifestyle and explaining the history made for an entertaining story. I also felt that the film was tailored for a lighter audience feeling that this was done to reach a wider audience. So for LOWRIDER I give it 3 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #115

An epic set in post-WWII Japan and centered on an American former G.I. who joins the yakuza.(Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Having been fascinated with the world of organized crime of all cultures it was only appropriate that upon seeing the trailer to the OUTSIDER I’d have to see it. This story of the Yakuza post World War 2 had a look that I hadn’t seen in any other film. I would also say the performance of Jared Leto was impressive and pretty much made the movie. As for the story I’d have to say it didn’t take much more of an original route from other films of this sort, which was somewhat disappointing. So in the end I give OUTSIDER a 4 out of 5.
