MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #127

In 1962 Hitchcock and Truffaut locked themselves away in Hollywood for a week to excavate the secrets behind the mise-en-scène in cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting-used to produce the mythical book Hitchcock/Truffaut-this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plummets us into the world of the creator of Psycho, The Birds, and Vertigo. Hitchcock's incredibly modern art is elucidated and explained by today's leading filmmakers: Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Arnaud Desplechin, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Wes Anderson, James Gray, Olivier Assayas, Richard Linklater, Peter Bogdanovich and Paul Schrader. Written by Cohen Media Website (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

This week has me screening another documentary this one is HITCHCOCK & TRUFFAUT. This doc has two of cinemas greatest auteur speaking on the art of filmmaking and their differing approaches. That being part of the conversation I knew I had to view it. Upon watching I felt the doc delivered a very interesting look at Hitchcock’s work and his legacy and this idea of experimentation that throughout the life of Hitchcock he seldom did. So for HITCHCOCK & TRUFFAUT I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #126

Quest-doc-family-survival-music-studio-life

Filmed with vérité intimacy for almost a decade, QUEST is the moving portrait of an American family living in North Philadelphia. Beginning at the dawn of the Obama presidency, parents Christopher "Quest" Rainey, and his wife, Christine'a "Ma Quest" Rainey raise a family while navigating the poverty and strife that grips their neighborhood. They nurture a community of artists in their basement home music studio, but even this creative sanctuary can't always keep them safe. Epic in scope, QUEST is a vivid illumination of race and class in America, and a testament to love, commitment, healing and hope. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Although I usually don’t review documentaries, when I saw the preview to QUEST I found myself dying to see how their story unfolded. Whether it was seeing people that looked like me or just seeing a family setting like mine growing up were elements that drew me in. As I watched it was easy to relate to their daily struggle to keep their head above water and keep the family together. Of course tragedy had to strike at some point as it did and even that struck a chord with me. So for QUEST I give it 3.75 stars of 5 for a well-crafted story.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #125

PATTI CAKE$ is centered on aspiring rapper Patricia Dombrowski, a.k.a. Killa P, a.k.a. Patti Cake$, who is fighting an unlikely quest for glory in her downtrodden hometown in New Jersey. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

My intro to the film PATTI CAKES came through a trailer while getting set to watch one of my other reviewed films. What I saw in the trailer lead me to believe this film was going to be a comedy. Upon watching PATTI CAKES it was nothing of the sort. My first viewing I saw it as a film of someone from a small town, which I can relate to, looking for their shot out. Initially I felt good about my takeaway from the film yet my second screening made it tough to still have that point of view as there were a few things that still didn’t set right with me in relation to the greater world view. Overall PATTI CAKES was entertaining with some great acting performances by not so well known actors. So for PATTI CAKES I am rating it a 3.5 stars out of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #124

When Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) gets fired, he convinces his brother Clyde (Adam Driver) and sister Mellie (Riley Keough) to help him rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway during a NASCAR Race. But they will need the help of Joe Bang (Daniel Craig), a convicted safe-cracker who is currently doing time. All they have to do is break Joe out, blow the racetrack vault, get away with the cash, return Joe to prison, and get Jimmy to his daughter's beauty pageant on time. What could possibly go wrong? Well, there is the Logan family curse . Written by Cinemaniacal (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

The film LUCKY LOGAN was one of those films I intended on seeing in theaters, but it never happened. I did hear good things about it from those who did see it. Upon finally viewing LOGAN LUCKY I felt it was a great amount of quirky and alternative lifestyle view to separate it from the slick gadget infused caper films I seen. I also felt the actor portrayals were on point making the characters really come to life allowing you to stew in a very crafty heist film unlike anything I’d seen lately. So for LUCKY LOGAN I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #123

Motivated by an almost ferocious love for his intellectually disabled brother, Nick, and an explosive mix of desperation and thirst for a better life, the abrasive and fledgling criminal, Connie, involves his sibling in an ill-conceived bank robbery that swears to be a quick and easy job. Instead, things go utterly wrong, and Nick will wind up in Rikers Island after one unanticipated complication, forcing the desperate but determined Connie to embark on a nightmarish, no-holds-barred quest to bail Nick out. Inevitably, over the course of a long and violent night, Connie will go to great lengths to save Nick from a cruel fate, doomed, however, to do more harm than good. Is it all heading somewhere? Written by Nick Riganas (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

GOOD TIME is a film that in recent times has me excited for filmmaking again. I first saw the preview to GOOD TIME while preparing to watch ROVER another film starring Robert Pattinson. ROVER turned out to be a tad bit of a disappointment, but GOOD TIME delivers. From the moment the screen pops and the story begins I was intrigued. The story is rather simple, but the journey you take with these characters is intense. I even think the way the director’s portrayed the action on film with the psychedelic score added to the intensity of each moment depicted on film. So for GOOD TIME I give it 4.5 of 5 stars.
