NETFLIX & CHILL #53

After an outlaw unknowingly leads a band of cannibalistic Troglodytes into the peaceful western town of Bright Hope, the monsters kidnap several settlers, including the wife of a local rancher. Despite his injured leg the rancher joins a small rescue party with the sheriff, his aging deputy and a strong-willed gunslinger. What follows is a journey into hell on earth as the posse comes to realize it is up against a foe whose savagery knows no bounds. The film takes place in the mid 1800's around the border of what is now Texas and New Mexico. Written by Anonymous (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database).

BONE TOMAHAWK is written & directed by S. Craig Zahler, and produced by Jack Heller and  Dallas Sonnier. As a film goer and film connoisseur I miss the days where a good western would take you on a journey through the wild west. Upon finding BONE TOMAHAWK on Netflix I had high hopes for this film and a rebirth of the genre. As I began to watch and see the characters set off on their journey of rescue of the damsel in distress I started to see elements that reminded me of why I love a good western. At a certain point though the story fell flat as the story took on a twist that for me lacked the reasoning or even back-story to help me suspend my disbelief and stick with the story till its end. I appreciate the attempt to tell a pulpy old western story, but for me connection to characters and the story lacked what I love about other westerns like The Wild Bunch, The Good, the Bad, and Ugly, or even Unforgiven. So for BONE TOMAHAWK I give it 3 stars.

NETFLIX & CHILL #52

After the murder of a child by a stray bullet, a group of women led by Lysistrata organize against the on-going violence in Chicago's Southside creating a movement that challenges the nature of race, sex and violence in America and around the world. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

CHI – RAQ is directed by Spike Lee, written by Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee, and produced by Spike Lee. As a fan of Spike Lee, his films and method of telling a story I find sometimes his stance on things has to be taken with a grain of salt. Whether it is a political stance or just his point of view on certain issues I find somehow these elements always leak out into his films. I’m not saying it is a good thing or a bad thing it is just an observation after having seen almost all of his films. That said CHI – RAQ is a film modeled after the play called Lysisrtata and how a group of women used their bodies to stop a war. Having known that cued me into why the dialogue was done in a sing songy poetic nature. For me at first that was a little jarring, but as I settled in it seemed to make sense. I found CHI – RAQ to be entertaining, but at a certain point I just kind of lost interest as it began to take on the absurd and outrageous and I kind of wanted to see the story told in a real way without all the metaphor and unrealistic take on a real matter. Overall not my favorite Spike Lee film, but still entertaining so I give CHI – RAQ 3 stars

NETFLIX & CHILL #51

A cryptic message from the past sends James Bond on a rogue mission to Mexico City and eventually Rome, where he meets Lucia, the beautiful and forbidden widow of an infamous criminal. Bond infiltrates a secret meeting and uncovers the existence of the sinister organization known as SPECTRE. Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh, the new head of the Centre of National Security, questions Bond's actions and challenges the relevance of MI6 led by M. Bond covertly enlists Moneypenny and Q to help him seek out Madeleine Swann, the daughter of his old nemesis Mr. White, who may hold the clue to untangling the web of SPECTRE. As the daughter of the assassin, she understands Bond in a way most others cannot. As Bond ventures towards the heart of SPECTRE, he learns a chilling connection between himself and the enemy he seeks.

SPECTRE is directed by Sam Mendes, written by John Logan, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and Jez Butterworth, and produced by Barbara Broccoli. As long as I can remember I’ve been a fan of the 007 James Bond series. I practically grew up watching theme from likes of Sean Connery and Roger Moore my roots grow deep. Now the recent continuation of the series with Daniel Craig maybe I’ve out grown the love for 007. This film in particular to me didn’t carry the attraction it used to, maybe the fact that I already know that James is going to make it out alive and get the girl. In that case it is more about switching up the story rather than the character himself. I like that James is so stylish and a bit of a rebel at times as well as his 100% commitment to his job. We seen him show some vulnerability, but never to the point where he seems flawed or have any kind of weakness. This to me is where I’d like to see some development. I do understand that in the reality of the James Bond universe if he was to have any real weakness he’d probably be dead already. So I get it, I’m just ready to see some vulnerability so can suspend my disbelief and really feel like the danger James faces could really be his end. So as for SPECTRE I give it 3 stars.
