MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #245

"Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don't know where they are -- or how they got there. In the shadow of a dark internet conspiracy theory, ruthless elitists gather remotely to hunt humans for sport. But their master plan is about to be derailed when one of the hunted, Crystal, turns the tables on her pursuers. Written by krmanirethnam (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

THE HUNT (2020), directed by Craig Zobel, written by Nick Cuse & Damon Lindelof, produced by Jason Blum. The premise of this film has always been interesting to me. The question for me was always how to execute it effectively and make it, so it is more than just about the hunt.

As I watched and remembered, this film’s release day was pushed back due to the political climate or some such situation I watched with a little more interest. Early on, the film didn’t give you much to go off or explain the situation, which I liked allowing the viewer to decipher things on their own. As the film and story progress, there is a clear standout acting performance from Betty Gilpin, whom I first saw and was awe of from the Netflix series GLOW.

In the End: THE HUNT for all of its attempts for dark or tongue-in-cheek humor, and due to the premise, I felt I didn’t bring it all together as I’d like. Although the performance of Betty Gilpin helped the film, in my view, remain entertaining. So for this film, I give it 3.5 of 5.

I CALLED HER ROSE

"The next round is on me." Dr. Riggs exclaimed above the roar of the vibrant club and club-goers. "If there ever were a perfect day, this would be it." He went on as he sipped off of his tumbler of Johnny Walker Black. Dr. Riggs was an older black man who had amassed a sizeable arcane amount of book smarts, but he was no doctor or Ph.D. His knowledge was in the streets, he was a hustler, but his day job was a sports agent.

That day they had signed the next big thing in sports, or so they hoped it to be. The kid was a 19-year-old phenom on the basketball court 6'9 with a savvy court vision and killer instinct. He would be leaving college to take his game to the pros and would most definitely be the first pick, but no less than 4th and signing a substantial size contract for sure. That is where Mr. Riggs came in, having been able to get some huge deals for his clients over the years, and had no doubt he'd be able to do it for this kid as well.

He was feeling good the previous month; he had been rough losing a family member and breaking up with a long-time girlfriend as they did not see eye to eye about their future. He hated the fact that it happened, but she called his bluff, and she was gone. So, to say the least, signing the phenom was a bit of good news for both his bank account and mindset.

The night progressed, surrounded by other agents and staff members of the Hustle Media firm. Dr. Riggs eyed the crowd at the 9 Steps club that night with a bevy of beauties in attendance. One, in particular, had caught his eye, a blonde in a tight red dress with a fantastic physique moving to the salsa rhythm playing over the massive sound system. Emboldened by the spirits and the wave of emotion of the day, Dr. Riggs left the bar and moved to the dance floor to meet up with the divine beauty that he had to meet eyes with through the night. She was dancing off by herself, and as he drew closer to her, she picked up his gaze, and, playing coy, she turned her back as he moved up on her like a stealthy animal of prey. They began to vibe as at; first, she seemed a bit hesitant, but seeing how Dr. Riggs could match her move for the move, she let him in.

The Hustle Media team marveled and joked at where and how he had learned such dance steps and then began crudely taking bets on how soon he'd leave with the woman. The group at the bar got feisty over the action. Even before the final stakes were set, Dr. Riggs and the woman in red had dipped out. Moving to a darkened hallway to ravenously make out. They then moved to his black Audi 300 super sport parked outside of the club in the lot. Upon reaching his vehicle and getting in, they indulged in each other. Caution was thrown to the wind, and Dr. Riggs felt as if he was back on top of his game, life, and clearly, this blonde-haired woman that he called Rose.

The next morning Dr. Riggs awoke at his apartment a little confused, expecting to see the gorgeous woman he had picked up the night before in his bed or somewhere about his apartment sashaying around in one of his dress shirts, but there was no one. He had awoken alone with faint memories of the events from last night. He then began to start his day showering and dressed, knowing later that day, he had a follow-up meeting with the young phenom, his new client.

As he went to make himself something to eat, a knock came at his door. Upon opening it, he saw it was the police. They then asked him his name and preceded to notify him he had been implicated in the murder of a young woman. Flabbergasted, he asked questions anyone would ask when accused of such a crime. They eventually asked him to come down to the station to clear this up, to which Dr. Riggs vehemently pleaded it had to be a mistake. Dr. Riggs made his way down to the station to see some of his own staff, giving a statement to an officer. He began to think things were going out of control fast, so he tried to remember the happenings last night. Things in his head were foggy, but they were there all the way up to meet the woman in red he took to his car that he called Rose after that, it was all a blank.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #244

Tensions and temperatures rise over the course of an afternoon recording session in 1920s Chicago as a band of musicians awaits trailblazing performer, the legendary "Mother of the Blues," Ma Rainey (Academy Award® winner Viola Davis). Late to the session, the fearless, fiery Ma engages in a battle of wills with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio's claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious trumpeter Levee (Chadwick Boseman) - who has an eye for Ma's girlfriend and is determined to stake his own claim on the music industry - spurs his fellow musicians into an eruption of stories revealing truths that will forever change the course of their lives. Adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson's play, MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM celebrates the blues' transformative power and the artists who refuse to let society's prejudices dictate their worth. Directed by George C. Wolfe and adapted for the screen by Ruben ... Written by Netflix (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM (2020), directed by George C. Wolfe, written by Ruben Santiago Hudson, adapted from August Wilson's play, produced by Denzel Washington. Seeing the trailer to this film and watching HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER starring Viola Davis and her FENCES performance sparked my interest.

Upon watching, I found an engaging story, but even better, the dialogue was incredible. The film was further graced with some amazing performances, one being Chadwick Boseman’s last. The story may not touch everyone, but knowing there was a character like Ma Rainey that existed back in the day is important.

In the End: MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM is a well-told, influential story with some great acting portrays. So for this film, I give it 4 of 5 stars.

THAT ONE PHOTO

Beth and Marvin had been back from their vacation only a matter of days. Their modest apartment was still in disarray as the vibrant young couple had just unpacked what was needed to start their work week and get back into the swing of things.

On one of her breaks from the hospital, as Beth was a registered nurse, she stopped by the local drug store to drop off both disposable cameras to develop the photos from their trip. On the way home, she stopped and picked them up without really taking a complete look through all of them. Rushing home to show Marvin. As she pulled up into the lot, she received a text from Marvin saying to message him back ASAP. Figuring she'd see him in a matter of minutes as he worked from home, she walked up to the apartment and entered. To her surprise, her mother, who had flown all the way from Virginia to surprise them, knowing they had just gotten back to the rigmarole of daily life, was sitting on their couch. She figured the couple would be supremely grateful for the gesture on her part.

Marvin didn't look too bent out of shape, but Beth knew how ruthlessly he protected his working hours. Looking at each other, they were both caught off guard by the surprise visit. Making Beth's mom feel welcome. Marvin had poured her a drink and was engaging in small talk as Beth walked in.

Beth settled in answering a barrage of questions from her mother about their trip to Jamaica Beth remembered the photos and handed one of the packets to Marvin and the other to her mother. The focus now was on flipping through the pictures and describing what was captured, helping Beth and Marvin relived their time in Jamaica, the island his family was from.

At one point, Beth saw Marvin get an expression of shock on his face with no idea why, but she then looked at the photo in his hands to see a buffet table at the resort they had stayed at. This photo jogged up a memory from that night for Marvin that perplexed Beth, but now seeing the shocked face turn to a sheepish expression on Marvin’s face, she knew something was up.

She turned to her mother, who exclaimed, "Oh, what is that?" turning the photo long ways, then sideways, trying to figure it out in bewilderment. Beth herself took up looking at photos peering over the stack of photos in her hand that she was looking at. Beth turned to see her mom with a frown, still figuring out what

the photo was.

"Mom, what is it?"

"I have no idea,"

"Well then, let me see," Beth explained. Her mother continued staring at the photo as if mesmerized by its imagery, intent on seeing and knowing what she was looking at. Beth moved closer to her mom on the couch to see what was captured, slightly apologizing for any images out of focus.

Upon getting a look, Beth started to say something and gave it a moment. "Oh, that looks like your..." turning to Marvin, still with a sheepish look turning into a grin. Beth knew what it was she and her mother were starting at in the photo and then snatching it from her hand along with all of the photos. Her mother began exclaiming,

"What is going on? What was that?!" "Ask Marvin,” Beth replied,

"What was that Beth's mother questioning Marvin.

Marvin looking at both women fighting off a shit-eating grin, finally getting the nerve to say it most respectfully. He began by calling her by her proper name of Mrs. Porter, as Beth held up the photo so he could see. It was a tad blurry, but if you had an idea of what the white spot in the picture was, as Beth did, a birthmark Marvin had on his manhood, you could place the rest.

This was a photo Marvin had taken in fun the night they had feasted at the buffet. As Marvin explained and Mrs. Porter began to understand what she was so closely examining began to blush, trying not to make eye contact with either Marvin or her daughter. She soon began to crack a smile as one could see the calculations going off in her head, and all she could say was,

"Oh my!"

Beth and Marvin burst out in laughter at her mother's clearly embarrassed reply.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #243

In 1987 Perth, Australia, John, and Evelyn White are serial killers who target teenage girls. One night, Vicki Maloney, who impetuously sneaks out of the house for a forbidden party, is lured by the pair into their clutches. Now paying dearly for her naivety, Vicki must endure a horrific nightmare of confinement and torture at the hands of this depraved pair. Against these murderers, Vicki's only chance of survival is a mix of subterfuge, cunning, and mind games while her estranged parents and her boyfriend desperately try to learn what has happened and what can be done to find her. Meanwhile, the Whites have growing problems of their own, which could provide the only hope Vicki could have to survive. HOUNDS OF LOVE (2016) was written & directed by Ben Young and produced by Melissa Kelly. This film had me a little fearful upon watching the trailer. The film is set in the horror genre, and that is not my cup of tea. The one thing that helped me push through was the quote “BRAVE AUDIENCES WILL BE REWARDED” - Variety. Upon working through that, I set forth and stayed vigilant.

I found a fantastic looking film set in 80’s Australia with a small cast that portrayed a tense and graphic story. This film may not be for everyone due to the subject matter, so I would not recommend it. And to better inform you, here is another review on HOUNDS OF LOVE from spookyastronauts HERE. I also believe the story this film showcases is different than anything I’ve seen in this genre.

In the End: HOUNDS OF LOVE was an intriguing look at a story that we have seen before but not told in the way we are used to. So for this film, I give it 4 of 5 stars.

VALENTINE'S DAY LETTER

Mona ran after the mail truck as it headed out from her block with a roar. It was at this time every year that she sent out her Valentine's Day card to the one and the only man whom she felt hadn't let her down. She ran as fast as her long and lean 18-year-old legs could take her, looking like a stallion galloping in the wind as her raven-colored hair bounced against her back and fluttered in the wind. Somehow this year's message meant more to Mona spending more time on this year's creation than in previous years.

She had turned 18 two months previous, and life was treating her as best it could as she began falling in with a crowd that was leading her a once pure heart in a direction that her family had warned her about. Sticking with the tradition she had been doing since nine. Hoping to show a more in-depth usage of her words and the trials she was facing. With the hope of some reply or sign to help her through those tough times. She wouldn't say she was desperate, but she was living in the world, which made a lot of sense.

She began to gain on the mail truck running the distance of the block she lived determined the letter tightly gripped in her right hand would be delivered. Her zip-up sweatshirt falling off her narrow shoulders, but she kept running. She remembered the first letter she had written Valentine's day card with her grandma's help, who had shown her a lot growing up, with this being one of the things she kept up with till the very day of her death.

Her grandma's passing was a severe blow to her as her relationship with her own mother was a bit rocky and, at times, unbearable. She'd run to her grandma and tell everything that was going on only to hear back from her grandma that she had to be patient with Rosita, which was the name of Mona's mother. She would say, "Rosita loves you, Mona, but sometimes she doesn't know how to show it." Mona would look at her in disbelief, but her grandmother would tell her she's learning to be a mother; maybe someday when you have kids, you'll understand how tough it is, but for now, be patient, and if you can listen to your mom she has your best interest in mind. That is how she'd always end their talks, and Mona would listen to her grandma, and for a time, she'd do right by her till the next argument with her mother.

Without her around, the only thing she had left was this annual correspondence that through the years became more and more meaningful to Mona as she started dating boys and hoping they'd be like the men in the romance novels she'd read. Yet they wouldn't, which again made the need for the continued correspondence was so vital to her.

Her grandmother was a huge fan of Elvis. And as much as she passed down her wisdom about life and dealing with the rough times. Mona, her daughter Rosita all shared the love for Elvis, from his music to his films and his masculine allure. In a way, this is how Mona learned what she wanted in a man as Elvis always made her feel special, like no one had ever made her feel. She collected his images, books, anything Elvis became her obsession to the point just like her grandmother who'd send Elvis a card on Valentine's day to tell him how much she loved and adored him in hopes she'd get a message or a sign back he was looking over her.

Mona finally caught up with the mail truck as it stopped for its next block of deliveries. Out of breath, Mona handed the red envelope to the mailman. Its content had continued a tradition that meant so much to her and the women that came before.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #242

A talented American graduate of Oxford, using his unique skills and audacity, creates a marijuana empire using the estates of impoverished British aristocrats. However, when he tries to sell his empire to a fellow American billionaire, a chain of events unfolds, involving blackmail, deception, mayhem, and murder between street thugs, Russian oligarchs, Triad gangsters, and gutter journalists. Written by Peter-Patrick76 (peter-patrick@mail.com) (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

THE GENTLEMEN (2019) is directed by Guy Ritchie, written by Guy Ritchie, Ivan Atkinson, & Marn Davies, and produced by Guy Ritchie. This was a film that ended up on my list of films to see, but it wasn’t until I watched a Chris Stuckmann review HERE that I moved it up the list to watch it sooner. I’ve been a Guy Ritchie fan since seeing LOCK STOCK & TWO SMOKING BARRELSand the SNATCH. So now you can understand what time it was.

Upon watching and hearing the popping dialogue with its cockney ascents, I was ready to go. In a sense, the film continues the look at modern U.K. day gangster films, but with a wit all Guy Ritchie. There are several familiar faces in this film, which is great to see as they take on roles they are not typically known for in this wild gangster whodunit.

In the End: THE GENTLEMEN fulfilled all the things I’d expect from Guy Ritchie, familiar with his catalog of films. I enjoyed the list of A-listers in this film, but I hope he doesn’t continue this trend in his next films even though I had a great time watching them. So for this film, I give it a 4 of 5 stars.

KNOWING HOW TO LIVE AT YOUR EDGE

I am sure we all have something we are scared of and that we are vulnerable. Maybe even at one point, we've made believe that we weren't scared of said thing till we got exposed for it. In situations like this, we may have been better off confessing to it than letting ourselves get compromised within our base or core friends for faking it. To admit to others and us is something to be honored and is part of the test of a true man living at his edge, but you only bring dishonor onto yourself and create mistrust within your circle when you lie. I want to share how one fully lives at his edge without faking it in today's piece.

To better understand this concept, I have enlisted David Deida's expertise, author of the book The Way of the Superior Man, focusing on the lone chapter Know Your Real Edge and Don't Fake it. I have done several chapter reviews from this book, as I believe it is a good primer for any young man and thought-provoking material for the rest of us men of the age. I will leave a link HERE to my last Youtube chapter review. So let's get back into it.

In the example given at the top, a person has lied and been exposed to his inner circle. Here is a man not living at his edge and is faking it, which is detrimental to himself and the men around him who may trust and honor him as a friend or at any other relationship dynamic level. David Deida describes this "edge" like this...

"Your edge is where you stop short, or where you compromise your fullest gift, and, instead, cater to your fears."

I would describe this as settling for less, giving in to our fear, and letting it dictate how we react. I also don't think Mr. Deida is talking about fear or fears in the sense of one is fearful of heights, spiders, or commitment, but at the same time, each of those things can make us compromise and give in to avoid them if they in act fear in us. Yet, I think his intent when referring to "fear" is to make a more significant contribution to humankind, earning a higher income, earning money in a more creative, enjoyable way, or even shaping your livelihood style.

In this sense, you may not know the edge of your fears because you have deluded yourself into feeling not afraid or that you have no fear, but you'd be lying to yourself as according to Mr. Deida as all men are afraid unless they are entirely free. And in this deluded state, you may not sense it, but your friends will sense your fear if you don't, making you untrustworthy.

Some men know the feeling of their fear and never approach their edge. For example, choosing a job, they can do easily. Here a man chooses work he knows will never be challenged by as he is afraid he may get exposed for bettering himself.

When we look at it from that perspective, we can see how toeing your edge can be beneficial. Or how Mr. Deida puts it...

"Honor your edge. Honor your choices."

Or this statement here...

"A fearful man who knows he is fearful is far more trustable than a fearful man who isn't aware of his fear."

And this is all-important because a man who knows his fear and still leans in living at his edge putting out his gift is more trustworthy and more inspiring than the fearful man hanging back in his comfort zone not experiencing his fear on a day to day level. What Mr. Deida is encouraging us to do live daily, facing our fears. A better way, which wraps this up this entire chapter significantly, is this...

"A free man is free to acknowledge his fears, without hiding them, or hiding from them. Live with your lips pressed against your fears, kissing your fears, neither pulling back nor aggressively violating them."

In closing, I thank you for taking the time to read this piece; my hope is it gave you something to think about or even think about implementing in your life. So, for now, God bless, and I will see you on the flipside.
