MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEW #122

SUPER DARK TIMES was a film I hadn’t heard much about, but my interest was peaked due to the trailer. Upon watching it and seeing how the list of events unfolded made for an entertaining romp. I enjoyed how they lead the characters into a twisting winding flood of emotions. I did end up having some questions regarding the series of events, but taking a second look helped me figure it all out, which may be a step I’ll take with future screenings. So for SUPER DARK TIMES I give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #121

In New Orleans, the hit men James Bonomo, a.k.a. Jimmy Bobo, and Louis Blanchard execute the dirty cop Hank Greely in a hotel room. But they are betrayed and Louis is stabbed in a bar by the mercenary Keegan while waiting for the payment of the contract. Meanwhile the Washington D.C. police detective Taylor Kwon comes to New Orleans to investigate the murder of Greely, who had stolen evidences from the Police Department. Soon he is shot by two dirty detectives but Jimmy saves his life. Jimmy brings Taylor to the shop of his daughter Lisa and she removes the bullet from his shoulder and nurses him. Taylor and Jimmy form the most unlikely partnership to investigate the crimes and after contacting the intermediate Ronnie Earl that had hired Jimmy and Louis, they discover a network of corruption formed by the lawyer Marcus Baptiste and the entrepreneur Robert Nkomo Morel. BULLET TO THE HEAD was a pick I made due to my love for campy action films. I enjoyed this film having an understanding that I wouldn’t expect too much of it. Yet I felt the story was interesting enough and the actor portrayals were decent enough. This film was made to have a gritty take on the relationship of an ex con and a cop and I felt it accomplished that rather well. So for BULLET TO THE HEAD I give it 3.5 stars of 5.

THE BAD BATCH follows Arlen (Waterhouse) after she's left in a Texas wasteland fenced off from civilization. While trying to navigate the unforgiving landscape, Arlen is captured by a savage band of cannibals led by the mysterious Miami Man (Momoa). With her life on the line, she makes her way to The Dream (Reeves). As she adjusts to life in 'the bad batch' Arlen discovers that being good or bad mostly depends on who's standing next to you. Having seen Ana Lily Amirpour, the director’s first film A GIRL WALKS HOME AT NIGHT I had high hopes for her most recent film THE BAD BATCH. Seeing the trailer for this film made me feel so many things toward hope that this film would be better than her first. Upon viewing the film the premise and the first 20 minutes held a glimmer of hope to surpassing what I felt for A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT. In the end THE BAD BATCH though having elements that I enjoyed it ended up telling a story that went nowhere, which was unfortunate and also confusing. Further more with some A-list celebrities playing atypical roles in this film furthered my hopes that it may have been more enjoyable than it was. So in the end I give THE BAD BATCH 3 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #119

With the sudden death of his father, fourth-generation prospector Kenny Wells sees the family business, Washoe Mining, rapidly decline and him out of business. But ambitious Kenny has a dream, a vivid vision that promises mountains of brilliant and pure gold in the lush jungles of remote Indonesia; an aspiration which the well-known, yet still unlucky geologist Michael Acosta shares. Before long, down-on-his-luck Kenny will convince the eager geologist to become his partner and set off on an adventure deep into uncharted territory, while in the meantime, he would hunt for investors. Unfortunately though, as the risky expedition begins without a single speck of gold or the promise of it on the horizon, disease and failure will begin to threaten the short-lived dream. I didn’t know what to think going into this film called GOLD. I did get a brief taste of the trailer, which gave me hopes for what this film may hold, but in the end I was rather pleased. I personally think Matt McConaughey is a talented actor and in this film he was in his typical form. As for the story it was a hard knock life, rags to riches type story, which for me are one of the best types as one gets to see how one attains riches and how the keeping of the riches tests their moral code. Films that I’d also consider to be in this category would be Founder, Wolf of Wall Street, or even The Pursuit of Happiness, all films that I definitely agree people watch. So for GOLD I give it 4 stars of 5.
