MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #148

Will and Eden was once a loving couple. After a tragedy took their son, Eden disappeared. Two years later, out of the blue, she returns with a new husband... and as a different person, eerily changed and eager to reunite with her ex and those she left behind. Over the course of a dinner party in the house that was once his, the haunted Will is gripped by mounting evidence that Eden and her new friends have a mysterious and terrifying agenda. But can we trust Will's hold on reality? Or will he be the unwitting catalyst of the doom he senses? (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Always a sucker for a good thriller I took in the film THE INVITATION on recommendation from a fellow reviewer. Not really knowing how this tense and confined situation was going to pan out I watched with great anticipation. I felt the unfolding of the story worked well and was also unpredictable enough to keep me interested. I felt the cast and their performance were adequate, but was hoping for a bit more shock value as the story was tipped on its ear. So for THE INVITATION I give it 3.25 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #147

The year is 1963, an illegal immigrant named Ho (Donnie Yen) sneaks into British-ruled Hong Kong. Equipped with guts and combat skills, he plunges into the underground world getting into constant conflict with rivals. After many adversaries, the once good-natured man is physically crippled and turns into a monster more atrocious than all the most corrupted cops and ruthless drug dealers. Ho eventually emerges as the most powerful drug lord under the control of Chief Detective Sergeant, Lee Rock (Andy Lau). However, with the establishment of Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) by the law enforcement in 1974, Rock is forced into premature retirement. But Ho still insists he would not be stopped as he determines to become the sole dictator of the drug empire. Written by DOK (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

CHASING THE DRAGON was a very interesting look into the life of a well-known triad boss. I have seen film like this regarding Italian or Irish mobsters, but showing another side was refreshing if not enlightening. The man character played by Andy Lau, who was playing a bad guy for the first time in his career, showed his acting flair. Furthermore, I must speak on the production level of this film as I see the Asian film markets stepping up their game and style. One issue of course was the film was subtitled and in order to keep up with the fast paced film it was hard to keep up with the dialogue. So for CHASING THE DRAGON I give it 3.75 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #146

When a videographer answers an advert of the website Craigslist for a one-day job in a remote mountain town to video the last messages of a dying man. The job takes a strange turn when the last messages get darker and darker. The videographer continues to see the job through, but when it is time to leave he is unable to find his keys, and when he receives a strange phone call he finds his client is not at all what he initially seemed to be. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Coming across the film trailer for CREEP I still didn’t know what to expect upon watching it. On the chance I finally did I was most struck by the performance of Mark Duplass having seen him in another film  THE ONE I LOVE where he was great as well. I was less struck by the way the story was delivered using rough and shaky camera footage ala BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Overall I felt the film was interesting, but didn’t hold my attention all the way through, but delivered with a splitting end. So for CREEP I give it 3.25 stars of 5 for it’s casting of Mark Duplass and its unique story.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #145

Barry Seal was just an ordinary pilot who worked for TWA before he was recruited by the CIA in 1978. His work in South America eventually caught the eye of the Medellín Cartel, associated with Pablo Escobar, who needed a man with his skill set. Barry became a drug trafficker, gun smuggler and money launderer. Soon acquiring the title, 'The gringo that always delivers'. Written by Viir khubchandani  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

AMERICAN MADE has made me rethink my thoughts on films based on true stories. I say that maybe because it is in the manner in which the retelling matters to me. AMERICAN MADE the retelling is a rumpus and daring tale, which made the film that much better as much as what was going on was already truly unbelievable. Tom Cruise (Barry Seal) was great in this film transcending his mega movie star status and really becoming the character. So for AMERICAN MADE I give it 4.5 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #144

Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of meta-humans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes-Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash-it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions. Written by ahmetkozan (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

To me the idea of the film JUSTICE LEAGUE sounds like a great adventure. Yet not being deep into the comic book lore of these films on one hand allows me to be in a position to just being entertained rather than finding flaws that don’t match up with the literature. So upon watching the film I found it to be heavy on action, but not so much for plot or a storyline that organically built its characters. In the end I was entertained by another comic book movie with incredible feats of strength and massive destruction, yet I feel nothing for what this team may face in future stories or how the dynamic of the team may change over time, which is what really make things interesting. So for JUSTICE LEAGUE I give it 3 ½ of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #143

Thirty years after the events of the first film, a new blade runner, LAPD Officer K (Ryan Gosling), unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what's left of society into chaos. K's discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former LAPD blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Written by Warner Bros. Pictures (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

The first BLADE RUNNER has a special place in my heart as it was a film that I not only enjoyed on its own, but remembered studying it in numerous film classes. I enjoyed how it was a futuristic film noir created before its time. So when it came to BLADE RUNNER 2049 my hopes were that they just don’t ruin it by making a sequel that flops. So upon viewing this new story I felt this film still had the haunting, dark and futuristic feel from the first film and continued on to tell a story very much on its own. I would also go on to say the casting come through very well with Ryan Gosling playing a great lead. So for BLADE RUNNER 2049 I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #142

In the Town of Derry, the local kids are disappearing one by one. In a place known as 'The Barrens', a group of seven kids are united by their horrifying and strange encounters with an evil clown and their determination to kill It. Written by Emma Chapman (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Not being one much for horror movies I found myself intrigued with the hype surrounding the remake of IT. Having never read a Stephen King book I was not familiar with his storytelling style. Yet as I began watching IT I could see how people could eat this up. From the creepy clown to the scare fest of elements seen by the characters, yet I felt it all was a little under whelming. Many times the book comes off better than the films and in this case I think that might possibly be true. So for IT I give it 3 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #141

In the Century XXVIII, the space station Alpha is a city where beings from different planets live together exchanging their knowledge and culture. Peace is granted by a human force, including Major Valerian and his partner Sergeant Laureline. They are assigned by the Defense Minister to retrieve the last species of converter in a dangerous mission. They succeed and back to Alpha, unknown humanoids abduct Commander Arun Filitt expecting to steal the converter. They head to a forbidden area that is infected but Valerian and Laureline follow them and disclose a hidden secret about the race and the infected area. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil  (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Having been wowed by the trailer VALERIAN: City of a thousand planets made it to my list of films to see in the theater. As much as that never materialized I had to catch it once it appeared on Netflix. Upon watching it I was amazed at the scape this film created. Of course I know this was a film made from the content of a graphic novel I was enthralled. In many sci-fi films I am either overwhelmed by its vastness or wanting more of a back-story, but I felt VALERIAN did a great job of both creating a clear focus as well as showing how incredibly diverse the film or VALERIAN story line could be. So for VALERIAN: City of a thousand planets I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #140

Evacuation of Allied soldiers from the British Empire, and France, who were cut off and surrounded by the German army from the beaches and harbor of Dunkirk, France, between May 26- June 04, 1940, during Battle of France in World War II. Written by Harvey (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Being a fan of war movies I felt DUNKIRK was right up my alley. I will say as many times as I saw the trailer it did confuse to what this film was really about. So upon seeing it I realized the predicament and was further enthralled. As a Christopher Nolan film it truly shows his handy work in the pacing and in the way the story is told. I did feel this film might not be as action packed as other war films, but it does make for a tense situation through out. So for DUNKIRK I give it 4 stars out of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #139

When an elite crime squad's lead detective investigates the disappearance of a victim on the first snow of winter, he fears an elusive serial killer may be active again. With the help of a brilliant recruit, the cop must connect decades-old cold cases to the brutal new one if he hopes to outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall. Written by Katrina L. Harrison (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

I don’t know what it was but from the beginning of the film SNOWMAN was just tuned out. I am all for a crime thriller, but this one just did not have the bite I was looking for. Visually the film looked great with several majestic locations, but that was for me the one redeeming factor as I felt the acting performances were mediocre at best. So for SNOWMAN I give it 2 stars of 5.

A man is out for justice after a group of corrupt police officers are unable to catch his wife's killer. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

I don’t remember seeing the trailer to the film I AM WRATH. I think it ended up on my queue due to the fact it stars John Travolta, figuring the strength of his performance and past performances would make this an interesting film. When all was said and done I realized I had seen this films similar to this before when it was called DEATH WISH or JOHN WICK and I was impressed with JOHN WICK, but not so much with I AM WRATH as it came off as kind of chaotic and not so well thought out. So for I AM WRATH I give it 2 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #137

A police raid in Detroit in 1967 results in one of the largest RACE riots in United States history. The story is centered around the Algiers Motel incident, which occurred in Detroit, Michigan on July 25, 1967, during the racially charged 12th Street Riot. It involves the death of three black men and the brutal beatings of nine other people: seven black men and two white women. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Moments before watching DETROIT I really had no idea of what to expect as I had only seen the trailer once. My gut had me thinking one thing, but I was hoping for something more. Upon my viewing I found myself watching a film that I probably could have missed and been the better off. I say that because I found no real redeeming factor to this film and story. It was like this film was made to highlight the injustice of that event and that era to get people riled up today. I also feel being that this was based on a true story certain lines of dialogue were used to reflect my assumption making this a type of propaganda. So for DETROIT I give it a 2.5 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #136

Director Spike Lee's drama was produced by the team behind Get Out and offers another provocative exploration of American race relations. In the midst of the 1970s civil rights movement, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) becomes the first black detective on the Colorado Springs Police Department. He sets out to prove his worth by infiltrating the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan and convinces his Jewish colleague (Adam Driver) to go undercover as a white supremacist. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Treating myself to another matinee special I went to see BLAKKKLANSMAN. In the trailers the story was presented as based on a true story. In most cases I’m not much for films of that kind, yet with Spike Lee directing I figured he’d add that special something to it to make it pop. In the end I didn’t get that, I got what felt like a simple retelling of a story that had some merit, but in the grand scheme of things didn’t really change anything history wise. I did like John David Washington, the main characters, performance was strong, but I was really hoping for more. So for BLACKKKLANSMAN I give it 3.5 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #135

Eva Khatchadourian is trying to piece together her life following the "incident". Once a successful travel writer, she is forced to take whatever job comes her way, which of late is as a clerk in a travel agency. She lives a solitary life as people who know about her situation openly shun her, even to the point of violent actions toward her. She, in turn, fosters that solitary life because of the incident, the aftermath of which has turned her into a meek and scared woman. That incident involved her son Kevin Khatchadourian, who is now approaching his eighteenth birthday. Eva and Kevin have always had a troubled relationship, even when he was an infant. Whatever troubles he saw, Franklin, Eva's complacent husband, just attributed it to Kevin being a typical boy. The incident may be seen by both Kevin and Eva as his ultimate act in defiance against his mother. Written by Huggo (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Upon seeing the trailer to WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN I was left with the tremendous feeling of what was this film really about. Having now seen the film I understand why the trailer was so ambiguous being that the film is actually told in three parts the present, the past, and the even deeper past. The film takes an interesting approach to how it depicts each of these moments and the moments that progress the story. I found the performances were legit and even had me thinking of how one should deal with life in this scenario. So for WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN I give it 3.75 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #134

After the untimely death of 16-year-old Martin's father on the operating table, little by little, a deep and empathetic bond begins to form between him and the respected cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr Steven Murphy. At first, expensive gifts and then an invitation for dinner will soon earn the orphaned teenager the approval of Dr Steven's perfect family, even though right from the start, a vague, yet unnerving feeling overshadows Martin's honest intent. And then, unexpectedly, the idyllic family is smitten by a fierce and pitiless punishment, while at the same time, everything will start falling apart as the innocents have to suffer. In the end, as the sins of one burden the entire family, only an unimaginable and unendurable decision that demands a pure sacrifice can purge the soul. But to find catharsis, one must first admit the sin. Written by Nick Riganas (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

With so much to talk about in this film THE KILLING OF THE SACRED DEER I don’t know where to start. This psychological thriller is so different than anything I’ve seen lately or possibly at all. Saying that I know makes it sound exaggerated but I’m not. The pacing of the film combined with these incredible shot lulls you to sleep almost and then all of a sudden you’re dropped into this character reality that you can barely believe. Definitely layers of metaphors exist so be prepared to give it a second viewing if possible. So for THE KILLING OF THE SACRED DEER I give it 4 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #133

Robert McCall serves an unflinching justice for the exploited and oppressed, but how far will he go when that is someone he loves? (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

As a fan of both Denzel Washington and the first EQUALIZER film it was more than a done deal that I be seeing EQUALIZER 2. Upon viewing it on a Tuesday at the theater my expectations were high, but I reserved the chance it may disappoint. For someone not having seen the first film there wasn’t much overlap in the sense that you’d need to see the first installment before this one. That said, I do feel the first film had more bite and that might very well be due to it being something “new”, but at the same time I don’t think EQUALIZER 2 did enough to make this more memorable than the first. So for EQUALIZER 2 I give it 3.5 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #132

The crown jewel of Her Majesty's Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spy craft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies. Written by Focus Features (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Having wanted to see ATOMIC BLONDE from the moment I saw the trailer. I was afraid my anticipation would be my undoing, as the film would turn out to be a flop. Upon watching it I was happily surprised as I felt ATOMIC BLONDE was a very stylistic and entertaining film. From the creative direction to the fight scenes everything lead to an interesting story with a twist of an ending. So for ATOMIC BLNDE I give it 3.95 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #131

Matt Scudder is a former cop now a private eye. He is asked by a drug dealer to find the men who kidnapped his wife. It seems like they killed her even after he paid them. Scudder refuses. But the man later goes to see him and tells him how his wife was killed. Scudder takes the job. He does some research and thinks the men he is looking for have done this more than once. And that everyone they grabbed is connected to a drug dealer. He was about to give up when they grab another girl and Scudder tries making sure she's returned alive. Written by rcs0411@yahoo.com (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES I originally felt was going to be a tangent from the TAKEN films that also starred Liam Neesson. Upon viewing I found out I was very wrong, although what was depicted was still rather entertaining. The era and pacing of the film were some of the more interesting aspects that may have been lost on the audience. I also feel the climax was a little anti climactic as I was hoping for something to really pop. So for A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES I give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #130

Bradley Thomas is a hard workingman. After him and his wife's miscarriage they admit the spark isn't there anymore and decide to have a baby. After being fired from his job, he turns to his friend who hires him as a drug dealer. A trade goes bad and he ends up in prison, the only problem is that a gang has kidnapped his wife and they will do an experimental operation on the baby unless Thomas kills one of the inmates in cell block 99. Bradley will not stop at anything until his wife is safe again. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)
I don’t quite know how this film got past me, but I did see BONE TOMAHAWK the director S. Craig Zahler’s first film.  In that sense I was familiar with his style, but not quite ready for the whole BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 experience. This film star Vince Vaughn who is usually most known for his comedic roles in films, but BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 is no laughing matter. Done in a manner of films from the 70’s we are taken on a journey that soon unravels on a dark downward spiral. Some of the elements outside of Vince Vaughn’s acting performance that make this film so good is the pacing of the film, which gives you a sense of impending doom as you progress. The other element is the fight scenes in which you see everything and the fighting is not heightened by quick cuts and editing tricks. I furthermore also enjoyed the simplistic and straightforward story. So for BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99 I give it 4 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #129

Amidst a wild flat meadow encircled by an Edenic lush forest, a couple have cocooned themselves in a secluded mansion that was not so long ago burned to the ground, devotedly restored by the supportive wife. Within this safe environment, the once famous middle-aged poet husband is desirous of creating his magnum opus; however, he seems unable to break out of the persistent creative rut that haunts him. Then, unexpectedly, a knock at the door, the sudden arrival of a cryptic late-night visitor and his intrusive wife will stimulate the writer's stagnant imagination. Little by little, much to the perplexed wife's surprise, the more chaos he lets in their haven, the better for his punctured male ego. In the end, will this incremental mess blemish, irreparably, the couple's inviolable sanctuary? Written by Nick Riganas (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

Having been blown away by the first few films of Darren Aronofsky I patiently waited for his next feature, that being MOTHER!. I didn’t necessarily know what to expect, but I had heard some things, which forced me to be ready for anything. Upon watching much like his other film Requiem of a Dream I was lulled into a sense of comfortability and then all hell broke loose. In MOTHER! though much of the visual and storytelling came from symbols that the writer/director used in an allegoric fashion to tell this expansive story. Several viewings seem to be the norm to grasp the real story being told so be patient and keep your eyes open. If all else fails go to YouTube and watch a video on MOTHER! explained. So for MOTHER! I give it 4 stars of 5.
