PREPARING FOR 2021 AFTER LIFE IN 2020

Oh shit! The year that has tested us all is finally coming to an end. 2020 was, for many, a trying year. Yet before you view this as a rehashing of things that pushed us to our limits in 2020, think again. As we go into 2021, this piece shares three things we can realistically do to prepare ourselves for the way of life to come.

Thanks for stopping in, and as I've mentioned, I will share with you three things I think are vital and realistically speaking ideal after a year like 2020 that we can do to start this new year off right. Off the bat, please give yourself a hand for making it this far. We've lived through a year that has tested each of us in one way or another, and still, some things just changed the whole game entirely. With all those things in mind, let's look at the three things we can do to prepare for 2021.

HAVE GRATITUDE = Rather than moving into the new year with a list of tired resolutions that soon becomes obsolete, or we detach from due to lack of discipline. How about we focus on being grateful for the opportunity to see another year. We've lost so much in 2020, from loved ones, our social norms. And in some ways, the connection with our fellow person. And with all of that and some more pilled on top, I believe if we come into this new year with a powerful sense of gratitude to start, again knowing what we've gotten through, the hope is this new growth in humble gratitude we will reap a harvest that will surpass anything we went through in 2020.

MAKE PLANS = From my standpoint, coming with some strong vibes of gratitude from our first step in preparing for 2021 only better helps solidifies our chances the plans we make will come to fruition. And I don't know what plans you may be thinking about, be it for yourself, your family, or business, but get crystal clear in your mind's eye what that may look like and put forth some action steps to make that happen.

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY = When things began going haywire in 2020, it was easy to lose hope and probably easier to stop holding ourselves accountable for the choices we made. Yes, a lot of it seemed to not be faults of our actions or worse out of our control, like living life under quarantine. There were even some 2020 meant being in a triggered state all day every day. And as we start the New Year, there will still be some lingering effects from the year. So I ask you to pledge to hold yourself accountable for your choices and how we react to the things that may happen around us and those we love. Being mindful in this way, we can keep ourselves in check and give us a greater chance to succeed at whatever we do in 2021.

So that has been my view on three things we can do realistically to prepare as we move into 2021. I hope this list has given you some things to think about or reflect on. Ultimately, however you react to this, I'm glad you made another year, and I hope 2020 was a year we never forget, but learn from and get better. So until next time, God bless, and I will see you on the flipside ...Let's GO!!!

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #238

Sam (Andrew Garfield) is a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Riley Keough), frolicking in his apartment's swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy in the City of Angels. Written by A24 (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

UNDER THE SILVER LAKE (2018) is written & directed by David Robert Mitchell and produced by Chris Bender, Michael De Luca, and Jake Weiner. This was another film recommended by a friend unfortunately or depending on how you see it fortunately I decided to take this film in.

Upon my first viewing, I found a hauntingly interesting film, but with no real reason for those feelings. I find the main character's motives engaging with a solid performance by Andrew Garfield. Yet at that point, I couldn’t tell you what the film was truly about.

Before my second viewing, I took in some youtube videos on UNDER THE SILVER LAKE explained. This time around I was better able to spot and decipher more of the coded and conspiracy content that this film is heavy in.

Along with the second viewing, I still got lost at some points but picked up more on the humor of the film making it more enjoyable. I am sure on more viewings more will be revealed to me the movie is that dense with content.

In the End: UNDER THE SILVER LAKE was a film made for multiple viewings to be able to unleash its charm. So for this film, I give it 3.5 stars of 5.

AS IF YOUR FATHER WERE DEAD

In the dynamic of the father and son relationship, expectations and criticism can extend from father to son, be they unspoken or not. So in today's piece, I will speak on another chapter from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida, focusing on the chapter entitled Live as if Your Father were Dead.

The father and son dynamic can be tough to navigate as a son with your father's expectations hovering over your head or continual criticism in your ear. To that notion, I reintroduce the book The Way of the Superior Man a book, which I have reviewed on my Youtube channel that you can see here BOOK REVIEW.  But to narrow our focus, I will focus our attention on the chapter Live as if Your Father were Dead. The chapter premise is simple, stating.

"A man must love his father and yet be free of his father's expectations and criticisms in order to be a free man."

Sounds fair, I would say. So how would a son become free of his father's expectations and criticism? The chapter directs you to do this to get in the frame of mind to understand how.

"Imagine that your father has died, or remember when he did die. Are there any feelings of relief associated with his death? Now that he is dead, is any part of you happy that you need not live up to his expectations or suffer his criticisms?

The chapter goes on to further question you in this manner, asking.

"How would you have lived your life differently if you had never tried to please your father? If you never tried to show your father that you were worthy? If you never felt burdened by your father's critical eye?"

When I think of my relationship with my father and the different stages of my life, my answers will change. I am sure at different stages, and ages for other sons, the outcome to these questions would vary as well, making them great for insight. These answers or how one would view living life differently guide us in how a son becomes his own free man.

As the chapter comes to a close, it asks one more thing of us to practice in becoming free men even if we still feel fearful, limited, unworthy, or even burdened by our father's influence.

"For the next three days, do at least one activity a day that you have avoided or suppressed because of the influence of your father. In this way, practice being free of his subtle expectations, which may now reside within your own self-judgment."

My point is sharing this chapter; knowing the relationship I've had with my father helps give insight. Furthermore, I hope this may help other men gain perspective on their fathers' relations to help them become free men in their own right.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #237

Slim and Queen's first date takes an unexpected turn when a policeman pulls them over for a minor traffic violation. When the situation escalates, Slim takes the officer's gun and shoots him in self-defense. Now labeled cop killers in the media, Slim and Queen feel that they have no choice but to go on the run and evade the law. When a video of the incident goes viral, the unwitting outlaws soon become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief, and pain for people all across the country Written by stmc-25959 (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

QUEEN & SLIM (2019 written by Lena Waithe, directed by Melina Matsoukas, produced by Pamela Abdy, Todd Cohen, and Lena Waithe. Having waited a good while to see this film, my anticipation level was rather high. Upon viewing the film, I was more than ready to see how this all panned out.

As I watched the film progress the relationship between the characters, it got to a point where I questioned the choices made by the main characters and how those choices would play out in reality. I felt the main characters had good chemistry on screen with a cast of other memorable characters and beautiful cinematography.

In the End: QUEEN & SLIM was a rather interesting film using a touchy topic as background for an atypical love story that, for me, came off well. So for this film, I give it 3.5 of 5 stars.

TO LIVE WITH AN OPEN HEART

At some point, if you live long enough, you've been hurt to some degree. And in a world of individuals, someone is bound to take your feelings for granted, which may lead to further hurtful situations. Yet the remedy to this is not by hardening your heart not to get hurt, but quite the contrary. In today's piece, I will be reviewing a chapter from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida entitled Live with an Open Heart Even if it Hurts.

So as I have shared with you so far, the superior man must live with an open heart, even when it hurts. I have read and reviewed this book on my YouTube channel and highly recommend giving it a read. If you like to find out more, follow the link here BOOK REVIEW.

So getting back to it, I know for some of you this sounds outrageous, and you are probably thinking, "Someone hurts me, I'm hurting them right back, or be damned if I let them hurt me again." In this frame of thinking during the pain, it is a denial of man's true nature. A superior man is free in feeling and action, even amidst great pain and hurt. To better understand this, I look to this passage to explain how the pain manifests.

"Notice if there are times when you find it difficult to look into someone's eyes, or times your chest and solar plexus become tense and contracted. These are signs of an unskillful reaction to hurt."

Being this is your reaction to being hurt, you are trapped in your self-protective tension, no longer a free man. Yet, it can be controlled and through practice in this sense, as the chapter states.

"Open the front of your body, so your chest and solar plexus are not tense. Sit or stand up straight and full, opening the front of your body, softening your chest and belly, wide and free. Breathe down through your chest and solar plexus, deep into your belly. Look directly into the eyes of whomever you are with feeling your pain as well as feeling the other person."

My point here in sharing this is to, yes, give you some food for thought, and help you understand what it means to become a superior man. That said, I leave you with this.

"To act as a superior man, a samurai of relationships, you must feel the entire situation with your whole body. A closed body is unable to sense subtle cues and signals, and therefore unable to act with mastery in the situation."

Hopefully, what I've shared with you today has given you some perspective and even something to think about. I have also reviewed another chapter from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida you can find here. Well, thanks again for stopping in, and until next time have a blessed day, and I will see you on the flipside ...Let's GO!!!

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #236

In dystopian South Korea, Jun Seok gets out of prison for a previous heist he and his friends had messed up, and the currency (the Korean won) has crashed massively, making the haul of their last job effectively worthless. Jun Seok proposes one last heist to his best friends Jang Ho and Ki Hoon for the trio to escape from their miserable situations. Their target is an illegal gambling house, which stores hefty stacks of US dollars. The trio recruits Sang-Soo, who currently works in the gambling house. After getting firearms from Bong Shik, a friend Jun Seok knew in prison, the quartet proceeds with the heist, which finishes messy but successful. They take a large sum of cash and the gambling house's surveillance hard drives, containing footage of shady dealings between the gambling house's owners and various criminals. The loss of the surveillance hard drives made the gambling house's owners unhappy. They recruit killer Han to track the quartet and retrieve the hard ... TIME TO HUNT (2020) is directed & written by Sung-hyun Yoon and produced by HanDae Rhee.
I took this film in off the recommendation of a Youtuber naming a list of “gems” found on Netflix. With that, I proceeded to watch a subtitled film that had me a little confused to a point as the film was to be taking place in a near-future situation, but nothing seemed that futuristic.

Furthermore, being a “heist-type-film,” the heist itself seemed to not have rational reasoning for doing it. That said, my interest wained, and as the film morphed into a revenge-for-hire to a survival-mode-film, I tuned out.

In the End: TIME TO HUNT, with its high recommendation, failed to keep my interest from numerous angles and so for this film I give it 2 stars out of five.

STOP HOPING FOR THE END

As I get older, there are some things you can never put off. I say that because, as I have found out, there is never going to be the "perfect time" to do the things that make you feel alive. Another way to look at this would be hoping for something to end so you could then be free to go after something you have always wanted. In this case, the thinking is flawed, as there will never be the right circumstance for you to go and do something you have always wanted to do. So in my piece today, I will take you through the chapter entitled Stop Hoping for a Completion of Anything in Life from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida.

So if you are like many men or like me out there, you've grappled with either knowing what your right gift is or finding the time to do it. As I stated earlier, I will be sharing an idea from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida. This book also happens to be a fascinating read, and I have read and reviewed it here on my channel; if you'd like to see that, you can find it here BOOK REVIEW.

Moving along, the chapter of my focus today in this book is the chapter entitled Stop Hoping for a Completion of Anything in Life. This chapter's simple message, in my own words, is as a man to not put off what you or your heart is nagging at you to do and do it now.

From the top, this chapter instills in us to start spending at least one hour a day doing what you feel called to do and do it right away. Of course, as a man, you may have numerous obligations from a job, family, or church, etc. Yet the case given here is that you should not let even these things impeded you. The chapter states

"Limited money and family obligations have never stopped a man who really wanted to do something, although they provide excuses for a man who is not really up to the creative challenge in the first place."

Proceeding in this manner will empower you and your gift as well as when you go to sleep, you will know you could not have lived a day with more courage, creativity, and giving.

As we continue, we as men may wrestle with our woman and wish, hope, and want things to be different. Yet as the book states, this is what we should do.

"Don't wait. Assume she's going to be; however, she is forever. If your woman's behavior or mood is truly intolerable to you, you should leave her and don't look back (since you cannot change her). However, if you find her behavior or mood is merely distasteful or a hassle, realize that she will always be this way."

Furthermore, the book goes on to state that one should.

"Learn to find humor in the unending emotional drama the feminine seems to enjoy so much. The love that you magnify may realign her behavior, but your effort to fix her and your frustration never will."

Lastly, to bring home the point of not waiting for completion home and becoming a man of substance takes time and dedication, and the willingness to see life like this.

"Men who have lived meaningful lives are men who never waited: not for money, security, ease, or woman. Feel what you want to give most as a gift to your woman and the world, and do what you can to give it today. Every moment waited is a moment wasted, and each wasted moment degrades your clarity of purpose."

DO IT FOR LOVE

The word Love is rather powerful. And depending on how one views it, it can mean a lot. In some cases, it signifies that someone likes something a great deal. When you start combining the word with other phrases and parts of speech, you can conjure up more emotion within the people. Take the phrase "Do it for love." As I have found out in my research, many songs had a similar title or verses saying just as much. Yet, I am sure we all have an idea about what doing something for "love" actually is. So in today's piece, I will delve deeper into this, looking into the chapter entitled Do it for Love from the book The Way of the Superior Man by David Deida.

So as my intro stated, I will be talking about Love, or more specifically, what doing something for Love looks and feels like. I know that doing the things I enjoy or "love" takes me to a whole different place than something I have to do or hate doing. As my mindset, I found and reflected on the book The Way of the Superior Man, a book I have reviewed here on this channel, and you can find it here BOOK REVIEW.

For reference, the book claims to be a spiritual guide to mastering the challenges of women, work, and sexual desire. And being geared to a male audience, a woman recommended it to me, so there is that.

Moving along, the chapter of my focus states,

"Most men's ultimate reason for doing anything has to do with discovering their deepest truth, enjoying total freedom and love, and giving their fullest gifts."

With that as an ideal, most men never really achieve that, yet they enjoy bits and pieces of freedom, sharing in on the good things of life: the Love of a woman, the pleasures of possessions, or building a comfortable life themselves. Yet at this level, as the book states,

"The freedom or love they have achieved and the way they have given their gifts often leave a sense of incompleteness."

Maybe you as a man have felt this? Feeling you could give more, do more, or that you want to untrap yourself from the loneliness, the tension, and fear and give your gifts? If that strikes a chord with you, then in the words of the author David Deida doing it for Love is this.

"To bloom woman and world for real takes authenticity, persistence, and courage of heart. A man must know the truth at his core and be willing to give his gifts fully. No holding back. He must be willing to dedicate his sex and his life to magnifying Love by penetrating woman and world with his true gifts. This willingness is rare."

You may be questioning what you just read, but yes, Mr. Deida compares a man giving his gifts to having intercourse with a woman and the world. He goes on to state that.

"Many men are willing to poke the world and bloom it in a mediocre way, making a few bucks and contributing enough betterment, so they don't feel their life is a total waste."

This statement says many men are just half-assing life. Whatever their reasoning may be from the anxiety of uncertainties, fear of giving entirely many men just due to the minimum to receive some pleasure out of it or comfort to qualm this nagging feeling of incompleteness.

To remedy this comes in two forms: renouncing sexual intimacy and worldliness, dedicating yourself fully, without the distraction of the unpredictable woman and world. The other, as the book states so clearly, is to

"Fuck" both to smithereens, to ravish them with Love unsheathed to give your true gifts despite constant tussle of woman and world, to smelt your authentic gifts in this friction of opposition and surrender."

Then, my point is that men need to step up and Do it for Love, be it with your woman or in dealing with the entrapments of this world. I mean, we all can relate to the idea of half-assing it getting just enough from our effort that it may seem to others that we've given our best, but deep down, we've only done enough to get ourselves off. Delve deeper, my man, find your truth, find your most accurate gifts and Love and then give it freely, knowing that no matter how unpredictable the world around or your woman may become, you have what it takes to penetrate them with your unrelenting Love.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #235

When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan's disfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan's untimely death. Written by Lionsgate (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

KNIVES OUT (2019) written & directed by Rian Johnson and produced by Ram Bergman. I don’t really remember what compelled me to put this film on my list. I do remember seeing the trailer, but I don’t remember it having much of an impact, yet here we are.

Upon watching, I found a film that harkened back to “who done its” of the past like the Oriental Express or Clue. In that vein I continued to watch knowing if I miss something I could be in the dark for the rest of the movie. I also felt the casting was interesting and as a whole the chemistry was good. Yet my quarrel is with a story that seemed that it could have been more compelling or at least memorable.

In the End: KNIVES OUT was a well-made film, even entertaining, but I felt it lacked something which would have me talking about it the next day or even a week later. So for this film I give it 3 of 5 stars.

THE MARKETING LAW OF CATEGORY

In a continuation of my last piece on marketing law of Leadership from the book The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and Jack Trout, I will move on to the next. In today's piece, I will be discussing the second law with you, which happens to be the law of category.

So in the previous piece, we discussed Leadership's law; if you missed that one, you can find it here LAW REVIEW. And today, moving ahead, we focus on the second law that being the Law of Category. This law from The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing states,

"If you can't be first in a category, set up a new category you can be first in."

This law is Al Ries & Jack Trout's advice when being second in the prospect's mind with your product.

Why is this? The reason is this "everyone is interested in what is new, and few people are interested in what is better."

According to the authors, when launching a new product, it is not how your new product is better than the competition, but what category is this new product. In the law of Leadership, the example used here was first to take a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. This was, of course, Charles Lindbergh. The second being Burt Hinkler, who in many cases is overlooked being the 2nd to do it. Yet I believe you know who was 3rd in doing this feat or do you? Third, in this case, was Amelia Earhart. Ms. Earhart 3rd to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, but she was the first woman to do it, creating her category as a woman.

Furthermore, this distinction is essential as the book states, "That when you're the first in a new category, you should promote the category, as in essence, you have no competition."

For those products, brands, or categories that have been around for some time, a way to re-invent themselves is to put your product in a new creative category, which allows you to again be first in another aspect and top of mind in your prospects mind.

So my point to the marketing law of category is to think differently and see how your product, brand, or category can still be first, be it a new category. To leave you with one other example, Heineken was the first highly imported beer. There may be a favorably positioned product to be the number one imported, domestic beer, and that would be Michelob. Lastly, to push to point home, Miller Light was the first domestic light beer, and if they can exist, so can an imported light beer, and first in that category was Amstel Light.

So there you have it, Law number two. Hopefully, this information was helpful to you, and that you learned something new. And until next time, have a blessed day, and I will see you on the flipside.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #234

On the eve of D-Day, the 5th of June, 1944, several American paratroopers are dropped behind enemy lines to carry out a mission crucial to the invasion's success: destroy a radio tower built in a little castle of an old French town that the Third Reich uses for communication between Berlin and Normandy beaches' bunkers. Due to the intense enemy fire, the planes are shot down, and most soldiers die in the landing or are killed by the Nazis' night patrols after they land. However, a private named Ed Boyce survives to find Corporal Ford, a last-minute incorporation from Italy and a veteran expert in bombs and explosives, rogue sniper Tibbet, war photographer Chase, and finally private Dawson. After they watch the killing of their superior Sargeant Eldson by a Nazi night patrol, Ford becomes the leader of the group, and they try to get the town with the tower in order to complete the mission. In the forest close to the town they meet Chloe, a villager who assists the soldiers in her home with ... Written by Chockys (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

OVERLORD (2018) Is directed by Julius Avery, written by Billy Ray & Mark L. Smith, and produced by J.J. Abrams & Lindsey Weber.

Having seen the trailer to get me excited for this film, seeing what looked like zombies, I was happy to see it finally arrive. Upon watching the film I found it immediately engaging with an incredible opening sequence.

As the film moved along, I found the film's scope rather limiting and, at the same time, a bit simplistic. Then, realizing the film was not going in your typical zombie format crossed up my expectations, leaving me a bit disappointed.

In the End: OVERLORD turned out to be a different film than I expected. Yet it still was entertaining, although I may forget this film in a few weeks or two as it didn’t do anything memorable for me. So for this film, I give it 2.5 stars of 5.

THE MARKETING LAW OF LEADERSHIP

I would not say I am a marketing guru of any sort, but there have been rules set that you violate at your own risk from the beginning. In today's piece, I will speak about only one of them, and that one is on Leadership.

As I have found my way through to a BA in Communication Design, Journalism, and back to Art, I have found a tremendous amount of information that has helped me in my self-promotion. One of these tools was the book THE 22 IMMUTABLE LAWS of MARKETING by Al Ries & Jack Trout. I have read and reviewed this book on this channel, and you can watch the review here BOOK REVIEW. In today's piece, though, as I had stated, I will be talking about the first of these laws, which is Leadership.

This first Immutable law states: "It's better to be first than it is to be better. It's much easier to get into the mind first than to try to convince someone you have a better product than the one that did get there first."

At my first read, I thought this idea didn't make sense, let alone be correct, but think to yourself, who was the first person to fly the Atlantic Ocean solo? Yes, Charles Lindbergh. Do you remember who was second? The answer to that is Bert Hinkler, but you probably never heard of him, and he was the more skilled pilot.

This law applies to any product, any brand, and any category. Looking at magazines TIME lead NEWSWEEK, PEOPLE lead US, and PLAYBOY led PENTHOUSE. We can even take it to our modern-day look at app-based car services as UBER leads LYFT or streaming services NETFLIX leads HULU.

Furthermore, the reason a first to a position becomes the one prospects recognize is that their name often becomes a generic reference for that product, brand, or category. For example, XEROX Copiers came first, and although others copy machines have developed since then, people have blanketed the process as making a Xerox copy. People ask if you want a COKE when they only have PEPSI –COLA. The portion of the law may not hold as hard and fast as the rest of the law, yet when thinking of a name for your product, brand, or category, think of a name that can be used as a "generic" term to describe it making it superior in the mind of the prospect.

A few notable firsts would be Neil Armstrong, the firsts to walk on the moon. Roger Bannister first to run the four-minute mile. George Washington, the first president of the United States. Thomas English muffins the first English muffin. Gatorade the first sports drink. Can you name any of those in the second position?

As the law states, if you are second into the prospect's mind, you are doomed to lay behind forever. It may not in all actuality be as I've stated be so hard and fast a rule, but for the last championship team, you can remember what the team that came in second was? And it is that simple.

So I hope this information from the book THE 22 IMMUTABLE LAWS OF MARKETING was helpful to you somehow. And so, like we always do, have a blessed day, and I will see you on the flip side ...Let's GO!!!

HOW TO PRACTICE PRODUCTIVE PROCRASTINATION

For as long as I can remember, the word procrastination had a negative connotation. As I write, I envision a student waiting until the day before an assignment is due to start working on it. Or the person who keeps putting off a task saying they'll do it tomorrow. These are your typical ideas of what procrastination looks like, which has always been a bad thing. But what if I told you procrastination could be productive? Well, in today's piece, I will show you how you can practice productive procrastination.

So I am sure, like me, the idea of productive procrastination seems counterintuitive. Yet in Austin Kleon's book Steal Like an Artist, which I have reviewed on this channel, you can find it here BOOK REVIEW. This section talks about how this practice can be helpful to the creative mind. Austin says it like this.

"I think it's good to have a lot of projects going at once so you can bounce between them. When you get sick of one project, move over to another, and when you're sick of that one, move back to the project you left. Practice productive procrastination."

This passage is so intriguing because I have always viewed procrastination as a destructive force that keeps one from the real success of completing a project. Here though, Austin states the truth in that a project can become dull or the inspiration to work on it fades. Instead of being stuck in that energy, which would probably lead to the type of procrastination we all know. Being we are in the outs with a project, we'll find anything else to do, so why not invest time in another project that brings us joy. In this way, we continue to progress on two projects, although one may pause for the moment.

Furthermore, as we begin to touch on another aspect of what we know about procrastination, the idea of boredom makes its appearance. Austin Kleon addresses that in this passage.

"Take time to be bored. One time I heard a co-worker say, "When I get busy, I get stupid." Ain't that the truth. Creative people need time to sit around and do nothing. I get some of my best ideas when I'm bored, which is why I never take my shirts to the cleaners. I love ironing my shirts-its so boring, I almost always get good ideas. If you're out of ideas, wash the dishes. Take a really long walk. Stare at a spot on the wall for as long as you can. As the artist, Maria Kalman says, "Avoiding work is the way to focus your mind."

I feel this hits the nail on the head as many times ideas for my next project or a breakthrough on a current project come to me during a moment of stark boredom.

So my point in sharing this piece is to inspire you to practice productive procrastination. As I've just shown through a couple of passages from Austin Kleon's book Steal Like an Artist, and we come to find out that all procrastination doesn't have to be bad procrastination.

I hope sharing this insight can help you in some way. And so for now, have a blessed day, and I will see you on the flipside ...Let's GO!!!

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #232

The Kims - mother and father Chung-sook and Ki-taek, and their young adult offspring, son Ki-woo and daughter Ki-jung - are a poor family living in a shabby and cramped half basement apartment in a busy lower working-class commercial district of Seoul. Without even knowing it, they, especially Mr. and Mrs. Kim, literally smell of poverty. Often as a collective, they perpetrate minor scams to get by, and even when they have jobs, they do the minimum work required. Ki-woo is the one who has dreams of getting out of poverty by one day going to university. Despite not having that university education, Ki-woo is chosen by his university student friend Min, who is leaving to go to school, to take over his tutoring job to Park Da-hye, who Min plans to date once he returns to Seoul and she herself is in university. The Parks are a wealthy family who for four years have lived in their modernistic house designed by and the former residence of famed architect Namgoong. While Mr. and Mrs. Park ... PARASITE (2019) is directed by Bong Joon Ho, written by Bong Joon Ho &Jin Won Han, and produced by Bong Joon Ho, Moon Yang Kwon & Kwak Sin Ae. Having heard this film won numerous awards including best picture I knew it would only be a matter of time till I would get to see for myself what all the noise was about. Upon watching, nothing much struck me as groundbreaking yet I watched on.

As the film progressed I began to disconnect from the group of main characters. I thinking that may have been the reason for my lack of ultimate understanding of the film and I believe it affected my overall affinity for the film.

In the End:
PARASITE was an interesting story up to a point, but I do question the point this film was trying to share. So for this film I give it a 3 of 5 stars.

HOW THE POWER OF WORDS CAN CHANGE OUR LIVES

I came across this quote, looking back at an old book I had read. The book was The Mindful Athlete. The author George Mumford accredited with helping Michael Jordan reach championship status. The quote I am talking about is, "What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become." In today's piece, I will talk about this quote, what it means, and how this way of thinking can affect our lives.

I believe that our thoughts and words have power, especially when we put intention behind them. I know for many people when they hear talk like this, it seems a little far fetched. Having read the Mindful Athlete by George Mumford and reviewed here on my channel, I recommend it to anyone who'd like to go deeper into this way of thinking, so check out my review here, BOOK REVIEW.

In this piece, though, I would like to focus on this quote, "What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become." To help decipher this quote, I want to introduce the Rice experiment. If you are not familiar with this experiment, here is a preferably well-made video on the topic RICE EXPERIMENT VIDEO.

If I had to explain this experiment, if you took cooked rice and put a portion of this rice into three containers and labeled each container, one loved one hate and the last container with no label. And in one month, proceeded to praise the loving container with your words, speak hateful things to the hate container, and said nothing to the non labeled container; you'd find some interesting stuff at the end of the month. What you would find is that container-spoken love and praise would still look reasonably good, even eatable. The container spoken hate and ill will to would become moldy rancid and not eatable. And lastly, the non-labeled container not spoken to would have the start of mold and not eatable.

So what is happening here? The experiment was initially done by Dr. Masaru Emoto using water. He found that based on the words spoken, the crystals in the water when frozen would look magnificent if spoken to lovingly, crystals in water spoken hate to were ill-formed and ugly, while water not spoken to showed no real change. This experiment proves words spoken with intention have power.

And now you probably thinking, why is this important to know? It is essential because if you go back to our quote, it says, "what you habitually think" or even say "largely determines what you'll ultimately become." Think of it like this, how many of us have negative thoughts or negative self talk that we use throughout the day? Telling ourselves we're idiots, we're not good enough, or that no one could love us. I know there are times we use talk like this is to be self-deprecating, and that can be charming and humorous, but if we took a good look, what is the dialogue saying?

My point then is this believing our thoughts and words have power would benefit us. It would benefit us to subdue any negative or hurtful self-talk and turn it into a more positive and loving dialogue with a positive outlook, which, as the quote directs, will significantly determine what we'll see in our lives.

I hope this was helpful to you somehow, as I know it has helped me think about the thoughts and words I use. So God bless, and I will see you on the flipside ...Let's GO!!!

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #231

A soldier introduces himself to the Peterson family, claiming to be a friend of their son who died in action. After the young man is welcomed into their home, a series of accidental deaths seem to be connected to his presence. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

THE GUEST is directed by Adam Wingard, written by Simon Barrett, and produced by Keith Cadler.
Having pasted up view this film for some time, I finally gave it a chance when hearing some good things about it from a friend.

As I watched, I could tell things weren’t right for what reason I didn’t know. So as I watched on, I found this film had you thinking one thing, and it goes another. This could be a great Halloween movie if you are into that kind of thing.

In the End: I found myself entertained with a satisfying ending; at least, in my opinion, that may lead to more? So for this film, I give it a 3.5 of 5 stars.

HOW TO GET YOUR WORK NOTICED

When I look back on my life this far and see where I once was, one thing becomes clear life is a process. I have always been talented enough, even through my accident, to draw from memory or to draw what I see. My skills have even improved over the years of work. I can even see how I could become even better if I worked on this talent/skill. So in today's article, I want to emphasize a point that can help you become better at whatever you do.

I have a book that I read and once reviewed on this channel to help explain my view. This book is SO GOOD THEY CAN'T IGNORE YOU by Cal Newport. In this book, Mr. Newport discusses how one's skill is a better barometer than a passion for finding the life work one will love. This book goes into great detail to explain this idea and what you can do to achieve that. I highly recommend this book, and if you like to see my review on this book, follow the link here BOOK REVIEW.

Moving along to the idea, I would like to explain from this book is where Mr. Newport speaks on this idea of "Craftsman's mindset." There is no brief passage I can reference to express this idea from the book so I will explain it in this way. The Craftsman's mindset is the ability to take something you know little or nothing about but have interested in it. Then stick to regularly focused repetitions of doing this task or exercise so that you will have confidently grown to master it or do it at a high level over time.

I hope you can see where I am going with this, but here is an example. Let's say a person wants to play the guitar. At first, they may know one or two chords, yet through diligent, focused practice, that person can soon learn all the chords and turn those simple chords into melodies that structure songs. Here is an example of what The Craftsman's mindset looks according to Cal Newport. I can even give you another example using myself.

At one point in my junior college days, a professor commented that I might have a writing future. I had written a few stories. One of which I read in class and received some excellent feedback. I wasn't till after taking a few other paths did I came back to writing and gave it a strong go researching and reading books on becoming a better writer. Soon I was writing everyday challenging myself with writing prompts I found online. I even sniffed out an opportunity to write for a magazine, periodically taking assignments as they come available. I have written numerous short stories and screenplays. This year I even entered my first screenwriting competition; wish me luck. The idea here with The Craftsman's mindset is to do the focused work that will make you better over time.

Furthermore, as you hopefully begin to see my point, there is a passage in the bock where Cal Newport talks about watching an interview by Charlie Rose with Steve Martin, and the topic was how Steve Martin dealt with giving advice. Steve Martin would go on to explain that the answer everyone was hoping for would be the blueprint to the same success he had, yet Mr. Martin would tell him or her, "Be so good they can't ignore you." As you can see, this advice turned out to become the title of Cal Newport's book. More importantly it proves to be a good starting point as Cal Newport sums it all up when talking about skill "That if you're not focusing on becoming so good, they can't ignore you, you're going to be left behind."

My point here is anyone of us can take The Craftsman's mindset as I have lain out from Cal Newport's book So Good They Can't Ignore You and can systematically master any chosen field with a focused craftsman's mindset. I know it has worked for me in my art, as well as my writing. If I had never taken that step, I don't know if I'd be as confident as I am to write, post, and share this article with you today. So there you have it; I hope this piece may benefit you in some way. Have a blessed day, and I will see you on the flip side.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #230

Years after Adonis Creed made a name for himself under Rocky Balboa's mentorship, the young boxer becomes the Heavyweight Champion of the World. While life is good with that victory and his marriage to Bianca, trouble comes to Philadelphia when Ivan Drago, the Russian boxer who killed Adonis' father, Apollo, arrives with his son, Viktor, to challenge Adonis. Against Rocky's advice, Adonis accepts the challenge without his mentor's participation and pays the price in a punishing bout he wins only by a technicality. Now injured and demoralized, Adonis cannot bring himself back into the game, leaving his spirit and title in jeopardy. Together, Adonis' family and Rocky must find a way to rekindle Adonis' fighting spirit to face the future in whatever choice he makes. Meanwhile, the Drago family has its own troubles trying to regain respect in their homeland that they lost at Rocky's hands as they wonder whether it is truly worth it. Written by Kenneth Chisholm (kchishol@rogers.com)

CREED II is directed by Steven Caple Jr., written by Juel Taylor & Sylvester Stallone, produced by William Chartoff. Well you know how it goes, you see the first film and then you got to see the sequel. In this case it was exactly that as I found CREED to be fairly good.

I was hoping for something memerable to happen in this film as it seemed both films had cameos from characters from the original ROCKY films. I thought that all was a nice touch although like I stated I was hoping for something memorable to shake things up. Even though what I hoped did not happen I found a sequel that tied a nice bow on a group of films that spanned several decades.

In the End: I found CREED II to be a likable film not much for breaking from the formula or being too edgy, but if it works it works. So for this film I give it 3 of 5 stars.

THE KEY TO UNLOCKING HABITS

One summer, when I was a youngster for those three months, I would wake and start my day memorizing a new bible verse. Over time I was able to recite from memory a good deal. Believe me, when I say it wasn't easy as at first, I was reluctant to do it, looking for a way out of it, or sometimes I didn't feel like it at all. My incentive to doing it was the church my family attended at that time its Sunday school was running a contest awarding the student who could memorize the most scripture would win a new bike. That as a driving force helped, and through as it turned out, I realized something compelling even at that young age.

I am sure you may be thinking this post will be something on spirituality or religion, being I mentioned memorizing bible scripture, but you'd be wrong. The thing I'd like to talk about is the power of creating habits. I know we all have habits because they are sometimes easily made, yet it can be hard to break once they become a part of our lives. In this piece, though, I want to focus on how habits can improve our lives and become our best versions.

The key I found in the book Turning Pro by Steven Pressfield another book I'd recommend reading and have done a book review on that you can find here BOOK REVIEW In the book, Steven Pressfield talks about habits in this way.

"The difference between an amateur and a professional is in their habits. An amateur has amateur habits. A professional has professional habits. We can never free ourselves from habits. The human being is a creature of habit. But we can replace bad habits with good ones. We can trade in the habits of the amateur and the addict for the practice of the professional and the committed artist or entrepreneur."

Even another way to look at habits comes from the author of Atomic Habits, James Clear. I have yet to read this book but have watched a TED talk with James Clear, and he described habits as votes for the type of person you'd like to become.

So in a sense, if you want to be athletically fit, the right votes to achieving that would be eating right and training in some specific way to attain the results you seek. If you wanted to be a writer, reading and writing regularly, if not daily, would be the votes set forth to achieve that.

Furthermore, over time your results may vary due to the level at which you did them.  Were you the amateur, or were you the professional? Did you take days off? Did you only do them when you felt like it? Or did you do them regardless, day in and day out, when you felt good and when you didn't?

These minor details are vital to forming habits that produce the best outcomes. And the most rewarding results come with taking a professional mindset and seeing them through. These books discussed here are great reads with tons more ideas on creating habits that help develop you.

My point to sum this all up is that no matter what you are looking to achieve in your life, the essential thing you can do is create habits that will help you move in that direction. And by sticking to them as a professional will further put the odds in your favor, the outcome will be all you desired.

As for that scripture-memorizing contest so many years ago, I am proud to say I won, beating out the pastor's son by sticking to my plan. I didn't get the bike, though, as I opted for the original Nintendo Entertainment System, a big deal back in the day. I hope this article has been helpful to you somehow; thanks for stopping in. God bless, and I will see you on the flip side ...Let's GO!!!

SCHOOLING YOURSELF

I recently had my 44th birthday, and if you know me and wished me a Happy Birthday, I want to thank you, I appreciate it. I find that getting older is that sometimes things seem to cycle back through, one day seems to blur into the next, and life can seem to take on a dull outlook.

Realizing this happens to lots of people, I sought out a book that has helped me. This book is Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon. I read this book a while back in hopes of finding some new ways of being creative. It is a small pocket-sized book with a ton of great ideas. I encourage people to read it and check out my book review from when I first read it here Book review

Today though, I will talk about one aspect from the book: " Schooling yourself" Austin Kleon puts it this way...

"School is one thing. Education is another. The two don't always overlap. Whether you're in school or not, it's always your job to get yourself an education.

You have to be curious about the world in which you live. Look things up—Chase down every reference. Go deeper than anybody else that's how you'll get ahead.

Google everything. I mean everything. Google your dreams, Google your problems. Don't ask a question before you Google it. You'll either find the answer or you'll come up with a better question.

Always be reading. Go to the library. There's magic in being surrounded by books. Get lost in the stacks. Read bibliographies. It's not the book you start with it's the book that book leads you too.

Collect books, even if you don't plan on reading them right away. Nothing is more important than an unread library.

Don't worry about doing research.

Just search."

My point is that sometimes rather than always looking to improve ourselves, we get comfortable and don't question the things we know to help inspire new ideas or school ourselves to the world around us. We need to get curious about life. Sometimes the answer to one question may lead to a solution to a yet to be asked problem.

I am talking about educating yourself and learning how to do that, which starts with curiosity. Austin gives some great ways to get lost in the search, be it Google or a library. Being my 44th year on this planet, I'm going to pledge this year to be excited about being more curious and asking questions. I can say the book reading will continue as I enjoy reading tremendously already. So yeah, Google and I are going to be good friends.

To finalize this, you have one effortless step you can take to improve your overall life and put yourself in a better headspace by jazzing up your curiosity and Schooling yourself. So until the next time, have a blessed day, and I will see on the flip side ...Let's GO!!!

TABLE DISCUSSION

The tension in the room was palpable, as everyone knew Kara was not happy. The Baldwin family had just gotten home from a teacher-parent conference, and the Baldwin parents were not delighted with their lone child Zachary's performance.

His teacher Ms. Adams this was the 5th grade, and as much as Zachary had problems in the previous grades, they had never faced anything like this relayed it to them. Ms. Abrams told the Baldwin parents Jesse and Kara, that Zachary was disruptive in class, not paying attention, and falling behind them.

They talked at the front of the classroom. Ms. Adams then discussed Zachary's most disruptive behavior was his lack of respect for those in authority. Kara was burning up under her collar as she heard these accusations. She had always pressured Jesse to take a more disciplinary role as a father, but his reply was nearly always that he didn't want to become his father, as his father was an abusive one. Kara would then bring up the fact that discipline for your child didn't mean you had to beat them. You needed to showed them the path to what was right and what was wrong, along with behavior that would build one into a competent adult.

Kara rushed through dinner as her frantic movements and haste showed she was still hot about the report on Zachary. Within minutes dinner was ready, and Kara called her family to the table, determined that by the end of the meal, she'd right the Baldwin family ship and take a better route in raising her son.

Plates served before anyone spoke. The clashing of utensils hitting the tableware was the only thing heard in the silence. Looking to Jesse to take the lead, Kara spoke up, but when Jesse didn't focused on his plate of food, keeping his corn from touching his mash potatoes or meatloaf, she leaped.

Kara asked her son Zachary what he had to say about what Ms. Adams told them about his behavior. Zach scooped a large bite of corn and mashed potatoes into his mouth, chewing down sloppily food flying from his mouth. Kara asked again, to which Zach, still chewing, exclaimed, "She's a Bitch, you can't trust what she says!" Kara and now Jesse wide-eyed, shocked at their son's answer, looked at him with disdain. Kara rebuked him, saying, "You watch your language, mister, you know we don't talk like that about our elders or anybody, especially your teacher!"

Kara looked at Jesse as she had risen from her seat, and Jesse barely moved, holding an intense glare at Zachary. She expected more of a reaction from him at that point, hoping he'd back her up in some fashion. Then with his gaze turned back in his plate, dividing his food up, he says, "I think we should ground him until we see some major improvement in his grades and behavior." Now both Kara and Zach looked surprised at Jesse's response.

Of course, Zach didn't see it as fair. Still, in Kara's eyes, the cool, calm, and collected response seemed to be just what was needed, and Kara showed her support with further clarification by saying, "Starting tonight, I agree you are grounded till we see improvement." Kara then looked to her husband, feeling they had just worked as a team in parenting.
