MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #161

Manji, a highly skilled samurai, becomes cursed with immortality after a legendary battle. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only fighting evil will regain his soul. He promises to help a young girl named Rin avenge her parents, who were killed by a group of master swordsmen led by ruthless warrior Anotsu. The mission will change Manji in ways he could never imagine - the 100th film by master director Takashi Miike. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

I love me a samurai tale and in the case of BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL it did not disappoint. Having seen several Takashi Miike films, and this being his 100th, I feel this was a definite stand out film. As this is content from a graphic novel I can see how it is part action, part fantasy, and even part comedy. BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL even has the hero story mixed in amongst the slashing samurai fight scenes that can take your breath away. So for BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL I give it 3.75 stars of 5.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #160

A haunted young woman spirals in the wake of profound loss, torn between her fractured emotional state and the reality-altering effects of a potent cannabinoid drug. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

For all intense purposes WOODSHOCK wasn’t the film I had expected to see. The trailer showed a trippy ride, but what I watched was a depressing film with an even more depressing message. I don’t know what I could say to use as a redeeming factor for this film. In the end this forgettable film had me questioning my selection for having this film in my queue. So for WOODSHOCK I give it a 1 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #159

A woman known as The Nurse (Jodie Foster) runs a high-security, members-only hospital for high-rolling criminals in Los Angeles. When a bank robber (Sterling K. Brown) brings his injured teammates along with $18 million in jewels there, both mob boss Wolf King (Jeff Goldblum) and the police follow. With the hospital under siege, The Nurse, her orderly (Dave Bautista) and her other criminal patients have to defend themselves. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

It has been a long time since seeing a film that the trailer really got me excited. I’m not necessarily saying HOTEL ARTEMIS was that film, but the premise and seeing the actors attached did. Upon finally getting to see it my feelings were mixed thinking the story was going in another direction. Was I entertained, yes. Did I like how it was set in a futuristic rioting world, yes. Yet at the same time if felt familiar like I had seen something like this before, enter John Wick 2. So for HOTEL ARTEMIS I give it a 3.5 of 5 stars.

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #158

In this adventure/drama, FBI agent Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) enlists a mysterious operative to help investigate a Mexican drug cartel that has been smuggling terrorists into the U.S. Things escalate when the daughter of a top kingpin is abducted, forcing Graver and his partner to re-evaluate their mission. Having been thrilled by the first SCARIO it was only natural that seeing previews to SCARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO that I’d have to see it. Upon watching it and being a little more familiar with this world of the scario some of the thrill was missing. From the weaving of stories and backroom deals depicted in the film the elements are still there for a tense thriller. I also feel the film production and sound design were on point something that I usually don’t pick up on so much in other films. So for SCARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO I give 3.75 of 5 stars.

A SIMPLE MEET AND GREET

MY NETFLIX MOVIE REVIEWS #157

A biologist's husband disappears. She puts her name forward for an expedition into an environmental disaster zone but does not find what she's expecting. The expedition team is made up of the biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, a surveyor, and a linguist. (Courtesy of Internet Movie Database)

There is something to be said for a good film trailer. Yet there are times when the trailer turns out to be better than the film. I’m not saying that the trailer for ANNIHILATION was better than the film. What I am saying is that watching the trailer made me feel the film was going to be amazing. Upon watching the film visually it is gorgeous with incredible special effects. Story-wise, oddly this is to be a drama/horror, horror/sci-fi, but it is a bit slow paced telling a story that flashes back from the past to the present. My thoughts from the trailer lead me to think of this sci-fi/thriller yet I was confronted with a cerebral type film that was more of a thought piece than adventure. So in the end for ANNIHILATION I give it 3 stars of 5.
